In 2005 "Echoes of the Protii", a full-cast Doctor Who audio adventure, was produced by the posters of the Planet Skaro Doctor Who forum. The play was based on a story written by Simon Hart and Si Hunt, and was distributed to over 30 people, no mean feat when you consider each play was individually printed, duplicated and assembled. The play was free, though voluntary charitable donations raised over £200 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
It seemed logical to produce a sequel for the story originally written to follow "Echoes" - "Soap of Fatal Death", based on Simon Hart's idea of a Doctor Who adventure set in the studios of a TV Soap Opera. The story itself continues the adventures of the Doctor, Nick and Rob, though is a standalone tale, and doesn't require a knowledge of "Echoes" to enjoy! Also, as before, the writers have made many changes in the adventure's journey to its audio adaption, so listeners familiar with the original story may be under a false aprehension if they think they know exactly what's going to unfold!
Originally written in 2003, the novella on which the audio version of Soap of Fatal Death was based was part of the Doctor Who: The Legacy site. This alternative version of Doctor Who was run and edited by Andy Frankham. During the writing process, Andy offered helpful advice and comments, particularly about the character Vinza, who has been renamed in the new version Daniel Nelson. He was originally set to join the Doctor and companion Ruby in the TARDIS at the end of the adventure.Unfortunately due to the need to find a role for our two companions, Rob and Nick, Daniel is rather less involved in this version of the story than he was originally. Ruby’s role was largely given to Rob, although Nick gained her love of Clear Waters and much of Daniel’s storyline was given to Nick. Suddenly the authors knew how Gerry Davies felt during the fourth season of Doctor Who! You can find the original novella at the Doctor Who: The Legacy website, but be warned, it’ll probably spoil the story for you! The script was developed over summer 2005, and is being recorded in January 2006 for release in the Spring. The long wait between audio plays was partly due to the great effort involved in producing the first story (a break was needed!) and as before, because by the time the script had been prepared, a further wait was required over the Christmas/December period, when it would have been difficult assembling the cast for recording. A third play is currently under development, and it's hoped that it can also be produced in 2007, breaking the cycle of waiting a year between stories! "Soap" differs from its predecessor in featuring many "fictional" sequences from the "Clear Waters" soap opera - most of the cast are not only playing their characters in the soap, but also the actors that play them, making it essentially a fictional story inside a fictional story! This will act as a greater acting challenge for them! As before, cameos have been sought from various members of the Planet Skaro Doctor Who forum unable to turn up to play major roles. In addition, this time there will be two main recording sessions enabling a greater flexibility in recording and to fulfil the wishes of a few people who professed a desire to "be the monsters" this time! There will also be a few more female voices in the play, after the main cast of the previous play was noticeably predominantly (but not intentionally!) male. This is essentially to satisfy the requirements of the original story, though it's intended that added variety will also be acheived with larger male/female balance. A trailer is planned to give everyone a taster of the story before release, and this will be unveiled on this website soon after recording! |
