I've been watching 2 DVDs that I had for Christmas - Seeds of Doom & Time and the Rani.
Seeds is quite an odd fourth Doctor tale, what with him already in situ with the establishment at the start. You could well believe that it was a story originally intended for Jon Pertwee. It's a shame the regular UNIT characters weren't able to appear.
On TATR DVD there's a clip where JNT gives his memory cheats comment with fans slating the new series but, as he suggests, remembering old episodes effectively through rose tinted glasses. And there's a lot to that.
There were several points in Doom that would have Gallifrey Base decrying. For example, the bogus driver pulls a gun on the Doctor and Sarah. The Doctor knocks him down, they then run off and he chases - only for the Doctor to jump him and punch his lights out before they run back and drive off. Why not just deck him at the car in the first place. Also, side-point, the Doctor was quite fisty-cuffy in this story!
Galleia in The Time Monster isn't actually a character, she's treated as a pair of bewbs that just happen to have a woman attached.
Be careful how you reply to this, Tim - Nicola Bryant might be listening...
Finished The Web Planet yesterday. Well you can't fault the story for the size of its ambition - and some of the filmed scenes really work. But on the whole, a little flat. The Menoptra are the campest aliens ever :-)
No sir! Surely that is really a vast alien plain stretching off into the distance?Quote:
But on the whole, a little flat.
The Web Planet is definitely a story that works best in small doses. Sitting down and tanking through all 6 episodes can be quite a demanding task.
Oh believe me - I did an episode a day :-)
I'm going to be watching The Two Doctors over the weekend. Haven't seen this story in over 15 years. Wish me luck :-)
You might well need it...:p
The Two Doctors! The story Robert Holmes nearly called "The Toe Doctors" (I think this is from his interview in The Doctor Who File). Bizzare.
I'm watching The Bells of St John. I miss Matt Smith. I like this one a lot.
I watched Android Invasion. I do love that story.

Of course, Vastra eating Jack the Ripper means that the world's most notorious serial killer was never brought to justice, his crimes remain essentially unsolved, and lots of really really talentless people have been able to make a living ever since posing as "Ripperologists". Those are not good outcomes.
I watched The Day of the Doctor yesterday. It's still blooming brilliant.
Partners in Crime. What a joyously brilliant story it is. So much fun!
I enjoyed The Two Doctors more than I thought! There were some very violent scenes in it though which I didn't recall as a 15 yr old kid. I would have liked more scenes between the two Doctors though. Someone forgot to tell Ms Pearce that she wasn't playing Servalan any more!

Got a bit of a cold, but I'm watching Planet of the Daleks - it somehow seems like a great story viewed through watery eyes and a chesty cough [emoji2]

That couldn't make it any worse
I finished watching Tenth Planet last night. Nice little story, episode 3 is a bit slow where nothing really happens but overall it's a nice ending to the Hartnell era.
It's not as bad as people say actually - very derivative I know, but it's okay. Pertwee's purple garb is a joy to behold, as are the Spiridon's "visibility" cloaks [emoji2][emoji2]

Of course with the German in Timewyrm: Exodus, it's not the movies they want to take Ace to, it's the "moofies".
Recently re-watched Human Nature / The Family of Blood. Wow what a bloody good story.
