Default Friday Poll No.6: Harry At War

Very simple poll this week - should Prince Harry (he who is heir to the throne to some extent) serve on the front line in Iraq?

Here he is with muck smeared over his face. Surely the Iraqi insurgents will be planning a worse fate for him than this?

It'll probably be character building and in the long run, he may be a better person for it. But he may also be a dead person for it. What do you say?

I voted Yes. I don't see why not. They may not give him the most exposed 'missions' but no one stopped Andrew going to the Falkland Islands.
It's not like there isn't enough Heirs is it?

If he's chosen to go into the army then he should accept all the thinsg that come with that, including active service in Iraq, or else what's the point? If he didn't want to go then he should have got an office job or something safer- the same for all the Royals.

Erm, Si, he wants to go but it is being said that he won't be allowed.

Oh I see. Well they shouldn't mollycoddle him anyway! I agree with you Tim.

I think so, the only worry is that he may become a target for insurgents, and that would put everyone in his unit at risk as well, which is why I think there's some reluctance to allow him to go.

The timing is unfortunate- Prince William's breakup last week means that perhaps we do need "the spare" after all. The best compromise would be for Harry to offer to go, but the Army senior officers to turn him down so that he can say that he abides by the decision of his superior officers, thus giving him the opportunity to display character without putting himself at physical risk.

He's already had enough special privelages. Send him to the front with all the others!

I don't think Prince William's break-up is that important. It's not like Kate Middleton stole his balls. There are plenty more posh fish in the in-bred sea.

I think Alex makes a good point, in that the other people in his regiment are likely to find themselves more likely to be targets simply because of Harry's position. HST, if that was a big concern then maybe somebody should have thought of that before he was allowed to sign up. And from his point of view, he seems to want to go, and his father and Uncle(s?) (and Aunt?) were all allowed to see active service (I think - definitely Andrew at least anyway!) and frankly he is in the army, so...

That's another YES then, if you can pick the bones out of the above rambling.

Incidentally, in my idle times I like to picture Princess Anne as being like Dennis Price's character in "Kind Hearts & Coronets" so she'll probably be quite pleased Harry's going to a highly dangerous warzone, as it may mean there's one less she has to deal with...

I'd have to change my avatar to something much more violent to express how they make me feel.
