Shocktastic!!!
Having almost fallen off my seat on Saturday as doddery old Derek Jacobi turned around and gave his all with "I... am.... the Master!" it's got me thinking to those occasions in the past where Doctor Who has pulled off a big surprise. It's not always easy to keep things quiet - certainly not nowadays with the InterneticWeb, and even in the 80s there was the choice between announcing the return of an old enemy for the advertising benefit, and keeping it quiet to give the viewer a shock. But there's still been moments - the Ice Warriors popping up in "The Curse of Peladon", or a genial friendly scientist turning into an evil Timelord in the final moments of an episode (I'm talking about "The Keeper of Traken" which totally stunned me back in 1981).
So what have been your favourite surprises in the past? And, also, are there any things you wish had come as a surprise?

Only real Doctor Who surprises for me were 'The Keeper of Traken', 'Earthshock' and that time Darren said he liked 'Utopia'. I've read all the spoilers for everything else.

The Cybermen in "Silver Nemesis" and The Master in "Survival".
I was too young for fandom, we didn't get the Radio Times and I was amazed...although I didn't recognize the Master at first and my brother had assumed the green eyed man would be Fenric/Dr Judson.
True d'at.

Simon R beat me to it, but The Master turning up at the end of part one of Survival was a big surprise for me as I had no idea he ws going to be in it.
I’m being extremely clever up here and there’s no one to stand around looking impressed! What’s the point in having you all?

I was probably surprised by a lot of things when I first started watching the show on UKGold, I just honestly can't remember, it all kinds of melts into one big memory...
From the new series though, definitely the moment where the Doctor discovers the Police Box shell in 'Father's Day', and the reappearance of K-9 at the end of 'School Reunion', and biggest shock of all, when Catherine Tate appeared at the end of 'Doomsday' - that really was a moment. Oh, and even though I sort of knew, I was in SQUEE! fanboy mode when the Master returned.

Oh yes, the Daleks in Army of Ghosts and Catherine Tate in Doomsday would be two others.

Many of the potential excitements of things returning in Who were runied by either DWM or the story titles themselves, but I can remember being shocked to see The Master in Traken (My Mum had luckily decided to read me The Deadly Assassin at the same time!) so that was good, and of course The Cybermen in Earthshock too.
Recently, like Pip, I've been stunned by the shock appearance of the new K9 (I cried!) and The Daleks at the end of Doomsday.
Si xx
I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

Watching "Doomsday" with a room full of friends, everyone had got so caught up in Billie's departure that we'd all totally forgotton that we were probably about to get a lead into the Christmas special. So it was an absolute shocker when Tate turned up. You could feel the thoughts ripple round the room. First "Hang on, surely we'll get a new clip now..." then "Who the frick is that?" then "Catherine Tate! Bloody hell!"

To be honest, when Borusa turned up as the bad guy in Five Doctors was a surprise.

My 'first time' was the reappearance of Davros at the end of part 2 of "Destiny of the Daleks" - awesome moment!
