Most romantic song ever?
What is for you the most romantic song ever written.
I'm asking this, as I was thinking about this today. There's a song I know which is all about the triumph of love over materialism which was written in the 70s.
It's all about a man who is so in love with someone, he's willing to offer over his most prized posession to the object of his affection.
That song is of course "I've got a brand new combine harvest and I'll give you the key", by the Worzels.
But I'm sure you can do better.

I can't decide if there's any difference between 'best love song' and 'most romantic song', but I've always said the greatest love song ever written is possibly The Beach Boys' 'God Only Knows' - it's so beautiful, it hurts.

"I Will Always Love You" by Dolly. True, it's written about leaving someone, so it's not romantic in that sense, but it is beautiful. Has there ever been a more touching and sincere parting shot as the spoken word mid-section?
"And I hope life
treats you kind
And I hope that you have all that you ever dream of
And I do wish you joy,
And lots of happiness,
But above all of this,
I wish you love.
I love you. I will always love you."

The great genius that is neil Finn has written some of the most romantic and beautiful songs there has ever been. He's more than qualified to do this because he really loves his wife and I mean really! You can sense that love in what he writes, but he makes them universally accessible and so anyone who has ever really loved someone can relate to what he writes.
Anyway, of all the great songs he's written, probably the most romantic is Wherever You Are from the album One-Nil. It's a song about someone waking up and just knowing, even in the empty hours at 3am, that there's love in his world. The second verse sums up all that is good about the other
You're gracious and good
When all around is turning bad
Restless and brave
When laid upon suburban grass
Your timing is right
Remove the sad persistent thought
Hold the course
But the chorus takes it further and I just get a lovely warm feeling every time I hear it:
I'm the one who reads your mind
Sees my life in your design
True companion at your side
Of course the most romantic lines ever committed to song are:
I don't pretend to know what you want
But I offer love.
That's him too. I wish i could write as clearly, eloquently and beautifully as that.
Si xx
I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

For me its Art Garfunkel's version of "I Only Have Eyes for You" the old 50's song. Its extreme cheese but lovely all the same.
"My love must be a kind of blind love
I can't see anyone but you
Are the stars out tonight
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
I only have eyes for you, dear
The moon may be high
But I can't see a thing in the sky
'Cause I only have eyes for you
I don't know if we're in a garden
Or on a crowded avenue
You are here, so am I
Maybe millions of people go by
But they all disappear from view
And I only have eyes for you"

I think my vote has to go to Bob Seger. What an amazing songwriter this guy is, certainly under-rated here in the UK imo. This song, Chances Are, was recorded as a duet with Martina McBride and was included in the soundtrack for the Sandra Bullock film, Hope Floats. Pure brilliance.
Chances are you'll find me
Somewhere on the road tonight
Seems I always end up drivin' by
Ever since I've known you
It just seems you're on my way
All the rules of logic don't apply
I long to see you in the night
Be with you till morning light
I remember clearly
How you looked the night we met
I recall your laughter and your smile
I remember how you made me
Feel so at ease
I remember your grace, your style
And now your all I long to see
You've come to mean so much to me
Chances are I'll see you
Somewhere in my dreams tonight
You'll be smilin' like the night we met
Chances are I'll hold you
And I'll offer all I have
You're the only one I can't forget
Baby your the best I've ever met
And I'll be dreamin' of the future
And hopin' you'll be by my side
And in the morning I'll be longing
For the night
For the night
Chances are I'll see you
Somewhere in my dreams tonight
You'll be smilin' like the night we met
Chances are I'll hold you
And I'll offer all I have
You're the only one I can't forget
Baby your the best I've ever met

For me, Groovy Kind Of Love, written by Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager. My fave version of the song being the slowed-down Phil Collins' cover version for the film soundtrack to Buster. Lyrics:
When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue,
When you're close to me, oh I can feel your heart beat,
I can hear you breathing near my ear,
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love,
Anytime you want to you can turn me onto,
Anything you want to, anytime at all,
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver,
Cant control the quivering inside,
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love...
When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue,
When I'm in your arms, nothing seems to matter,
My whole world could shatter, I don't care,
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love,
We got a groovy kind of love,
We got a groovy kind of love,
We got a groovy kind of love.
Simple and effective, and rather beautiful.

Because I'm a little bit on the grim side and I tend to err towards being shat on from a great height by people I fall for, I like Dame Tina Arena's "You Made Me Find Myself" for the thoughts on love:
I used to think if I surrendered I'd be the perfect one for you
But I swear I can't remember a single day of happiness with you
I used to breathe you, I used to need you
I used to hang on every word that you say
It used to please you to try to make me someone else
And I thank you from my heart for your help
Because you made me find myself
No I'm not going back in time
And there's a price for being strong
But I can live with who I am.
That's all a bit depressing, but worthy. Darren Stanley Hayes usually showers my ears with nicest love lyrics.
So Beautiful:
"And if all the world was smiling I would only ever want to see your frown
You know they can sail away in sunsets we'll be right here stranded on the ground
Just happy to be found, you make me feel so beautiful
Nowhere else in the world I wanna be, you make me feel so beautiful"
Or Good Enough. But you can google the lyrics for that one.

Surely it must be one of the following:
Lady in Red (Chris de Burgh)
Everything I do I do for You (Bryan Adams)
Love is All Around (Wet Wet Wet)
Take my Breath Away (Berlin)
My Heart will Go On (Celine Dion)
You can't be suggesting that the record buying British Public were wrong, can you ?
(I think Paradise by the Dashboard Light is how real life tends to work )Bazinga !

One song I absolutely love is Something by Shakira.
I've pulled out some of the lyrics, and just reading them without hearing them sung they look dire (the words don't seem to flow), but when she sings them they sound just perfect - she's a very tallented gal ...
And there's something
You've got something I can't resist
Things are what they will be
When I look into your eyes
They say to me that God still exists
You make me believe
You make me believe

I like Prettiest eyes by Beautiful South.
Line One is the time
That you, you first stayed over at mine
And we drank our first bottle of wine
And we cried
Line Two we're away
And we both, we both had nowhere to stay
Well the bus-shelter's always OK
When you're young
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
That you die
Let's take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
Not through the age or the failure, children
Not through the hate or despise
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Line Three I forget
But I think, I think it was our first ever bet
And the horse we backed was short of a leg
Never mind
Line Four in a park
And the things, the things that people do in the dark
I could hear the faintest beat of your heart
Then we did
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
You should die
Lets take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
You can't have too many good times, children
You can't have too many lines
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Well my eyes look like a map of the town
And my teeth are either yellow or they're brown
But you'll never hear the crack of a frown
When you are here
You'll never hear the crack
Of a frown
