    So I see.

This forum simply doesn't do my panorama pics justice - still it fits!

But you've lost Lee Major's star!

More amazing pics, of all sorts! I saw a bit about that Bodie place on one of Claudia's kids shows (a sort of 'Arthur C Clarke's World of the Unexplained' for under-12s). Isn't there supposed to be a well, or a mineshaft where you're supposed to be able to hear a moaning or somesuch?

Hi Andrew, I thought Bodie was fascinating - I've still got the guide to read through which may well mention the Well you speak of. If it was the mineshaft then it's probably in the pic with the girl with the legs of which Wayne was most fond

I found that double entendres falls flat in the states, they just don't get it at all!

Not exactly a double-entendre, but when I was in the states for a week (back in 1996) I was having breakfast in the lobby one morning, when a customer at the desk, discussing futons with the clerk, said "Fire futon torpedoes" - it didn't get a laugh from the clerk, although it made me smile!!

Sadly my attempts at taking pictures in Hollywood Boulevard a couple of years ago didn't quite work out- what you have to realise is that there are a couple of hundred people standing around looking down, so nobody's particularly aware of anybody else trying to take a photo. I was also down to the last couple of shots on my memory card so I gave up after somebody stuck their shoe in the picture I was trying to take of William Shatner's star.

Yeah it is a bit awkward to get a pic with the slabs being underfoot!

I saw the Shat star but preferred his joint slab. Just on slab etching technique I see Sean seems to be the only slabist to take his shoes off when doing his footprints

I had the Lee Majors star on this thread but Pip botched it :P

    Am I unforgiving or what!

    I've resorted this misdeed!

Can I ask what's really probably a very dumb question... What's the difference between a star and a 'signature in the concrete'? What I mean is, is it like getting a OBE and then getting a Knighthood, or what? And if so, which is better, a star or a signature?

Lots more people have stars than signatures in the pavement, and it's an entertainment industry thing rather than just films. There's only a certain amount of space in front of the Chinese Theatre anyway (although within the last five years they've basically taken the back off and built a multiplex behind the frontage), but the impressive thing is that the old ones stay there. The stars in the pavement also cover music and TV, so there are a lot for singers and bands. What's a little sad is that when the stars get broken in two (as they occasionally do) nobody seems to be doing anything about them, and I suspect that as new ones are put out the old ones are moved off to the end of Hollywood Boulevard. It was a bit of a shock to find Doris Day's (broken) star towards the very end when the woman's still alive.

As far as I understand it Andrew the "stars" have to pay for the privelage. Presumably as Ian says because of space pressures the slab opportunities are more limited. Re Doris Day's slab, maybe she can't be arsed getting it repaired?
