The best character never seen ...
It's a hard thing to pull off - a truely memorable character you never see.
There are several examples of characters on TV shows you never got to see but made a presence non-the less; from Mrs Mannering in Dads Army, to "er indoors" in Minder.
The best probably has been Niles wife Maris in Frasier.
Any other examples?

Les Dawson's mother-in-law & Ronnie Corbet's wife.

Mrs.Mangel's mysterious husband!
I say that, but he turned up in the end and nearly got married to Helen Daniels. So Si tells me.
Bummer!Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

Wanton - he's a ball buster and Thornton Reed's immediate boss in Darkplace.

I'd second Maris as being the best one, we never saw her once but knew exactly what she was like.
Not quite fitting in to the category, but we only ever heard George's boss in Seinfeld and never saw him, and he was a superb and very funny character. I'm sure that idea was ripped-, ahem, I mean homaged by something else fairly recently, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.
As for the most rubbishiest character, I'd like to nominate The Banker in Deal or No Deal. It started off as a nice idea, but they've stretched it way too far these days.Last edited by Alex; 17th Sep 2007 at 10:46 PM.

What about "Carlton your doorman" - we heard from him, but never saw him.

We never saw the PM in Yes Minister but he still managed to put the fear of god into Jim Hacker.
Dennis, Francois, Melba and Smasher are competing to see who can wine and dine Lola Whitecastle and win the contract to write her memoirs. Can Dennis learn how to be charming? Can Francois concentrate on anything else when food is on the table? Will Smasher keep his temper under control?
If only the 28th century didn't keep popping up to get in Dennis's way...

Del Boy's mother is a famous example - often mentioned, never met.

That means nothing though, they could easily have done a flashback episode, many shows have.

Nick Swainey's Mum in One Foot in the Grave is a bit of a favourite of mine. Was she real? Who knows?

We worked out that she had to be real because a nurse goes up to see her in one episode. I love Mr Swainey.

What about 'Dr. Claw' in the Inspector Gadget cartoons? You only ever saw his hands.. And along the same lines, Blofeld, at least from the first few Bond films before he was revealed.
