    Default Half Term Who!

As it's half term, Loughton Library has decided to impose a bit of fun on the local kids, and once more, the librarian's had one of his ideas (a polite way of saying his one idea)

"You there!... erm... Willis!" he bellowed from the other side of Essex.

When we'd fixed the windows i asked him what he wanted this time.

"Doctor Who!" I was listening. "We've had a couple of Doctor Who promotions recently, you may have noticed." I said as i'd had a small amount of input into them, yes i had. He continued.

"As the others were popular, in that nobody complained-" I liked the way he used nobody in the sense that ignored those of us who'd actually had to put any work in "-let's have another one, shall we? This time, why don't we have a poll of the small people's favourite Whovian monsters - you know, Darth Vader, the klingons, the Lib Dems..."

    I smiled wanly.

"You know about these things, don't you? Then I'll leave you with it." And he went off to shout at an old lady who was bothering to read something. "I'll not have that sort of behaviour in my library! Do it again and I'll feed you to... erm... sorry, it was Walliams, wasn't it?"

So, the upshot is, the local brats are voting for their favourite new series monsters. There's the standard book display, from which so far i'm the only person who's borrowed anything yet, but the librarian's got all week to get them to whip up any interest, literally knowing him; and there's three boards in the kid's section with printouts of the likes of the Cybermen, the Jagrafess, those things that Wayne seems to like, what were they again? - oh yes, the Dagenham Girl Pipers! - and the kids are putting stickers on their favourites, and thankfully not on eachother.

And because I'm devious like that, just to see who's paying attention, not only have I put the novelisation of Kidulthood in the young adults section, I've put in a picture of Simon Pegg, just to see if anyone recognises/votes for him.

Seriously, votes are going surprisingly well. After the first day, here's the top five so far in reverse order:

    6 votes - the Daleks (!)

    7 - the Krillitanes

8 - the Pilotfish (or Killer Santas for those kids who may have missed their names before)

12 - The Cybermen and the Judoon

    26 - the Weeping Angels.

Which I must say surprised me! I was expecting the usual two to be leading. I shall be keeping an eye on this poll for those who would like to know how it's going.

An intriguing insight into the life of Mr Wallis...

I'm amazed to see the Weeping Angels doing quite so well, although I'm pleased that the Judoon are in second place.

I bet the Weeping Angels are only in the lead, as they're the most recent! Kids today - don't they remember the Ice Warriors!?!? God, they have such short.... short.... um.... no, it's gone.

(A hilarious post, by the way, Mr. Wallis! )

Put up a picture of Koquillion or the Fish People, Stuart, just to see whether they get any votes!

I put photos of the Krotons, Macra and the Taran Wood Beast on my Who display (which got an update last week, adding Christmas/Series 4 details for the kiddies, along with a big picture of Kylie. For me, more than them.

Trouble was, the brief, and given the librarian it would've been very brief, it had to be monsters they'd recognise. So Kylie's out, but it might be an idea for next time. Although in a maid's outfit taken from Voyage Of The Damned, as you say Pip... (The photos I had in mind wouldn't get me very far if they were in Kid's corner though!)

I think you should change this to 'The Wirrn' and see if anyone notices.

"Well, that went well, erm... Walters," said the Librarian. "Do you know, somebody even voted for me!" (I neglected to say that the staff would have done without being asked.) "Now then, what about putting up our Christmas display?"

"Sorry, what was that word beginning with C...?"
