    Default Val Screamers

The December issue of DWM (with Kylie and the Dalek on the cover) has solved a mystery that has puzzled the world for 42 years. Or has puzzled me since 1993 at least. Just what exactly is the Grey Lady in the shoddy Haunted House section of The Chase shouting?

I could certainly never make it out and thought it sounded like "Val Screamers" whatever that is (over excited fans of "Prisoner Cell Block H" star Val Leahman perhaps).

The answer is in the Fact of Fiction article and ratehr boringly the word is "unshriven" and is do with Banshees and confessing sins before death or something dull like that.

Did anyone here actually know that from watching the episode though? Does she say it in the novel?

What other instances are there in Doctor Who (old new, TV, audio, film, stage) of us mis-hearing lines.

I've millions from "Revenge of the Cybermen" alone and there's the whole "Five Doctors" "Galactic Missile" debate for a start...

I felt a pang of pain when I read that article and the mystery was blown out of the water like a twink on a first date. Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal screamers! no more.

    I shall miss it.

The Five Doctors has plenty, "Dialbolic Engines Working!" for one. Then there's "Time and the Rani": "I would always be removed from the TARDIS hence forth!"

I always look forward to Deadly Assassin part 4, when the Master excalims 'Whoa, Nelly' when the Eye of Harmony appears

Oh really Jon? I've always heard it as "Rassilon's discover, Whoa boy!"

A boy who shall not be named swears Lady Peinforte yells "Stop you fool, you'll break the horror!" before she leaves olde Englande in "Silver Nemesis".

From the start of the very same episode, DWM once hinted (and it's true, it does sound like it) that The Master appears to call Goth a "craven-hearted c***."

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was that!

(Just in case you hadn't worked it out, it's actually "I want all mirrors removed from the TARDIS henceforth!" )

I always liked the "I'm manly, arse me buckle" line, although that was just from the Watcher (I think) in DWM. It DOES sound like it though.

What is it that Leela says in "The Robots of Death" when they're in the scoop and all the Voc Robots come in. One of us says it's "Witches!" and one of his says it's "Watch it!". Or is it something else?

    He's definately wrong about:

    "It's beautiful."
    "Bit girlish for my tastes."

In the style of Monica Geller: "That isn't even a wooooooord!"

I've lots of these from "Revenge of the Cybermen".

I used to think Sarah said "Snake bite? You mean them?" with the emphasis on them suggesting she knew who the Doctor meant but didn't want to say.

    It works!

"Like Aris, I try to believe three impossible things before breakfast."

I thought that was the line for years and years.

Poul, as he comes back into the lounge area on the Sandminer near the start of Robots of Death:

"I'm returning - has anyone noticed?"

    Sutekh to the Doctor:

    "Abase yourself, you're grovelling insanct!"

The Five Doctors - Jan Putrid: "It's the robot's export arrows..."

I assumed that's what one called arrows wot "export" out of a robot...

    In Remembrance of the Daleks:

    MIKE: Matthews is dead!
    ALISON: Dad, are you sure?

For years I was convinced Mike was Alison's dad, however unlikely that may seem!

There's a line early in "Revenge of the Cybermen" where Sarah says something like "are you sure, I mean it doesn't look like our Ark" which I heard as "are you sure, I mean it doesn't look like the Horrall Ark".

    It's a name!

Another Ark In Space one, this time from Harry - "Crikey, she's stardust!" is actually "Crikey, she's cyanosed" apparently.

I could never make that line out either and thought it was "Crikey, she's cyled" whatever that is.

Try another? "Five Doctors" (again) - "It's because they delight in devious Miss..."

Similarly, for a time, in 'Death To The Daleks', I thought that Peter Hamilton kept referring to Galloway as 'Dad' rather than 'Dan' and, even as a twelve-year-old, wondered why they didn't make more of their relationship!

I always used to think that in "Remembrance", Ratcliffe declared:

    "Soon it will be warm!"

Me too - except I thought it was "Daddy? You're sure?"

We've remembered another one from that old Val Screamers favourite, "The Five Doctors". What IS it the Brigadier says as the rubble falls down? Sure as hell never sounded like "you've angered it". More like...

    "DE-MAND IT!!"
