Default Sir Edmund Hillary has died

First man to climb Mount Everest (with Sherpa Tenzing) has died aged 88.

Another great name gone, but 88 is a decent age.

Another adventurer lost. I guess in this day and age, we take it for granted the world is a smaller place. He's one of the last breed of men who went into areas of the world which were blank on the map, and left his mark.

Although it is a shame that he has died, he did live to a good age & he lived life to the full. He did what most of us never will...he did something that will get him remembered.

    R.I.P. Sir Edmund.

There's something very fitting in having Everest conquered by a New Zealander- the Kiwi approach to taking on an impossible job (and you can see it in Peter Jackson as well) is to make a start and see how it goes. His death just goes to emphasise how our world has stagnated and lost the will to go further.

How sadly true. Hilary was a true pioneer in an age when there was still stuff to be discovered, and achievments to be made.

    RIP Sir Edmund Hilary.

I believe there is talk of giving him a state funeral.

    He deserves it.

If Steve Irwin can get one, then Edmund Hillary should get one (and yes I know they're different nationalities... but both in Australasia).

Out of interest this made me go on the internet to find out "what happened to the other guy", Sherpa Tenzing ...

And of course Edmunds entry himself.

    I love this quote ...

Another interesting aside of this ascent was that all the photos that existed of the mountaineers on the top showed only Tenzing. When asked why there were no photos featuring Hillary, Sir Edmund replied, "Tenzing did not know how to operate the camera and the top of Everest was no place to start teaching him how to use it". Hillary and Tenzing remained friends throughout their lives.
