Lego is great, but these days it never seems as good. Kits used to all be made of the same basic parts. I have a JCB, a car, and various other Technic Lego kits when I was younger. Each kit had alternative builds as well (the JCB also made a combine harvester, as I recall). Now every kit seems to have a large number of specialised parts that make it only possible to build one thing and make mix-and-match fun less easy to do.

It definitely doesn't seem as complex as it used to be. Even the Technic Lego is not nearly as complicated to make as it used to be. It's a shame because as you say the flexibility to construct anything you want is taken away with that.
