    Default Was Bobby Moore knighted???

M'self and the artist formerly known as Dog Face have been trying to get a definite answer to the question of whether Bobby Moore ever became Sir Bobby. Some sources say he was and others say he wasn't. The info was removed from Wikipedia a couple of weeks ago but several newspaper websites have called him Sir Bobby Moore.

It is vexing us greatly and any help would be appreciated.
Dennis, Francois, Melba and Smasher are competing to see who can wine and dine Lola Whitecastle and win the contract to write her memoirs. Can Dennis learn how to be charming? Can Francois concentrate on anything else when food is on the table? Will Smasher keep his temper under control?

If only the 28th century didn't keep popping up to get in Dennis's way...

Not according to Sir Geoff Hurst's book, which is currently resting on my lap. He was awarded the OBE in 1967 at the same time that Alf Ramsey was knighted. Bobby Charlton was knighted in 1994 (which may be where some of the confusion comes from- people know that Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst have been knighted and think Moore must have been) and some of the other members of the side were honoured in various ways down the years, but it wasn't until 2000 that MBEs were awarded to those members of the squad who were without.

It's only in the last decade or so that football and knighthoods have gone together apart from a few outstanding examples, to the detriment of the likes of Bob Paisley, who won rather more trophies at a higher level than any knights currently in football management.

    From BBS Sport

Ramsay, who died in 1999, was knighted in 1967, a decoration that was bestowed on Hurst and Bobby Charlton in the 1990s.

But for his death from cancer in 1993, iconic captain Bobby Moore would undoubtedly have joined that triumvirate as a knight.
So, it seems he never was Knighted but probably would have been had he lived.

As a West Ham,fan I can confirm that Bobby Moore, was never Knighted, it a shame that he never lived long enough to receive one as a Knighthood would of gone some way to making up for the disgracefull and shamefull way English football and the FA treated Bobby after his retirement..

Thanks for the replies chaps - it seems pretty conclusive that he wasn't. Though perhaps someone should tell Geoff Hurst...

Presumably he either meant to say Sir Alf Ramsey and Bobby Moore and the words came out the other way around (too much McDonalds can do that) or the copywriter took it down wrong.

Or it could be a mark of respect for a man he beliueves deserved to be Knighted.

Roger Hunt has of course been known informally as "Sir Roger" to Liverpool fans for the last forty years.

And of course, Sol Campbell has been known to Spurs fans as Sir R Sol since he left to join the Gooners.

I suspect a sub-editor's "correction". Almost as good as the one where in an interview Brian Clemens seems to claim that Dennis Spooner wrote Pennies from Heaven.

well Bobby , may not of got the Knighthood, he rightly deserved but the statue of him that now stands out side Wembley is still a fitting tribute.
