    Default The Grand National

It's the 161st running of the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree this weekend...

    2008 Grand National - Runners

Anyone got a bet on? I've got McKelvey in the sweepstake at work... and I've put £2 e/w on McKelvey, Philson Run and D'Argent - should get something back!

"COMPLY OR DIE" is the bet if you're a Dalek fan.

But to be honest I think it should be banned. Jump racing is cruel to horses, the Grand National even more so.

It's something that always seemed to mean something to my folks (then again my grandma was actually from Aintree) and my dad tends to put a pound on a horse for anybody who wants a go. But once you get into it, the idea of training (and neutering) horses for our pleasure, in the knowledge that one of them may well die in the course of the race, is uncomfortable for me these days.

Looks like my luck is changing, I should have put money on it. Where's that lottery ticket?

I picked the first three horses on each way bets and have won just over £40.

    My odds viewpoint:

2/7 - You can shoot this horse before it starts and it'll still win.
10/1 - It won a race once! It may do again, but probably not today.
    33/1 - This isn't a horse, it's a donkey.
    50/1 - Three legged horse.
    100/1 - Two legged horse.
300/1 - Two legged horse that needs a zimmerframe and has a weak heart.
500/1 - The Jockey would do better with the horse on his back.

Clearly the only fair way to deal with situations like that is for the jockey and trainer to be subject to the same treatment. Perhaps then your once-a-year punter would think twice about the ethics of putting horses at risk in the name of entertainment.
