On the other hand, it's not all doom and gloom:
Doctor Who has set a record on the BBC iPlayer.
The first episode of the new series, featuring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, clocked up the most requests in one week, The Mirror reports.
'The Eleventh Hour' had reportedly received 1.27 million hits seven days after it was broadcast on BBC One.
An episode of Top Gear was the most-watched programme of 2009 on the service after clocking up 1.6 million hits, but that was available for longer than the episode of Doctor Who.

Do iplayer watches count towards ratings though? It seems to me that there's so many ways to watch something at a time convenient to you, that the number of people watching on the actually night is nothing like a true reflection of the overall number of people that will watch via other means.

Agreed. Ratings are no longer necessarily a good indication of a programmes popularity.

They are to the powers that be, and that's what counts. They might not include EVERYONE, but they are still the best way to get an overall indication. Even with all-time record viewings, the people that watched on iPlayer still only total 10% of the actual recorded rating. So even if they are excluded (and I thought they did add on iPlayer views now?) it's not going to skew the figures THAT much.

AI of 84 for 'Victory of the Daleks'.
BBC iPlayer figures aren't added, but 'The Eleventh Hour' set a new record with 1.27m requests in seven days:

Again, there's a nother big rise there, isn't there? I don't think we've got much to worry about at this stage really.

Ratings are important, I think, but only as one of the factors in determining a programme's appeal. Essentially the most important thing for Who is to maintain its position as the most-watched non-soap drama of the week, excluding event television such as the final Frost and the premiere of BGT, LBGT, LBT or whatever it's called. What the drop of the last couple of weeks only goes to show is that there are a couple of million potential viewers who can be swayed by the latest big thing, and it's those that Who has to try to keep.

HD and I-Player are ruining Doctor Who!
Am I right in thinking that 'Stenders and Corrie are yet to be broadcast in HD?Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

You are right.
Although confusingly ITV seem to broadcast not HD material (like Corrie) on their HD channel, which doesn't help anyone.

Ratings are crawling upwards like a slow burning Lady Gaga hit up the charts. If Matt Smith is still the Doctor in ten years time, at this rate they will have hit 30m and be the most watched program on BBC 1 for twenty years.

Another great result for Time of Angels:
Final figures for The Time of Angels published today by BARB show the story was watched by 8.59 million viewers.
The figure is, once more, much greater than the initial overnight figure, indicating many record the programme for watching later.
The programme got 8.13 million viewers on BBC One, where it was the fifth most watched programme for the channel for the week. An additional 0.46 million watched on BBC HD. When the figures are added together it gives Doctor Who a total of 8.59 million viewers and makes it the eighth most watched programme of the week.
The BBC Three Sunday repeat did not appear in the top ten for the week for the channel. The HD showing of Confidential did make it into the HD chart with 0.092 million watching, 9th for the channel for the week.

I have to say, ratings are looking very healthily consistent. I think I'd rather we get 9m every week (if it continues) than the slightly unsettling peaks and troughs that earlier seasons brought. Remember the mid-season lull during Series 1, when it took "Love and Monsters" to get the Ratings climbing again after the dull "Impossible Planet" put people off? People seem to be happy to tune in every week at the moment.
