The Doctor Who Proms Thread

Doctor Who is to feature in this year's Proms, alongside Nigel Kennedy and maypole dancing. Daleks will roam the Royal Albert Hall at the Doctor Who Prom in July, which will celebrate music from the popular BBC show.

Proms director Roger Wright said the musical emphasis would be on the British Isles, with other compositions from Eastern Europe. And he denied the presence of Doctor Who meant the world-famous music festival was being dumbed down.

The event, presented by Doctor Who actress Freema Agyeman, will feature the show's iconic theme tune alongside other compositions related to time and space, including Holst's The Planets - Jupiter, Wagner's Die Walkure - the Ride of the Valkyries. Doctor Who star David Tennant will also appear at the concert, in a pre-recorded scene written by Russell T Davies.

The 2008 Proms season takes place from Friday 18 July to Saturday 13 September.

The Doctor Who prom is this Sunday at 11am. It's being broadcast on R3 simultaneously with the Albert Hall performance and is being filmed for broadcast later in the year, apparently.

Spoilery info about the special scene to be shown on Sunday:

As reported previously, there is an "old friend" returning in the PROMS CUTAWAY. This character is the GRASKE. This scene, and the accompanying concert, is being recorded by the BBC for future broadcast. The Graske first appeared in the the interactive story, ATTACK OF THE GRASKE and then returned in THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES two~parter, Whatever Happened To Sarah Jane?

Wow!

What a fantastoc concert it was. There was a brilliant atmosphere in the RHA this morning, especially when all the kids gasped and shouted as various monsters appeared round the hall during the music. The Daleks and the surprise appearance of Davros after the interval (and we're sure it was Julian Bleach in the costume too) was a real highlight, as the massive ovation for Catherine Tate as she turned up to announce one of the pieces of Murray Gold's music. The applause was biggest for her all morning!

Music of the Spheres was small and fun, with lots of interactive bits for us in the auditorium. My nephew was amzed when the bits of paper flew "out of the TV" Awww!

Splendid. You may see us when it's televised. We were sitting just behind Murray Gold! Oh my!

I've been listening to it on iPlayer and found the mini-episode on YouTube (with audience reaction mixed in). Wish I'd gone!

Seems that for someone in the audience, the best part was illegally recording it, putting the video on YouTube and getting loads of hits. W00t.

I listened to it on the radio and have been listening again on iplayer.

I suppose it's not allowed but anyone know how it might be possible to download it.... or is asking that a cardinal sin?

Highlights on TV soon...

Doctor Who At The Proms, which features highlights from the concert that took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on July 27, will be broadcast on New Year's Day on BBC One. It starts at 1.50pm and lasts an hour. The programme will include Music of the Spheres - the specially-filmed scene featuring the Doctor and the Graske, which was written by Russell T Davies.

There will also be extra coverage on the red button after transmission according to the Radio Times.
