I know, it's a crazy idea, but it suddenly hit me and I thought it may possibly have some merit.

what if the doctor's daughter went back in time (after she inexplicably turned evil) and planted a fake memory of herself in the first doctor's mind so in the events of The Mark of the Rani he would remember her? maybe she pretended to be Barbara during The Aztecs when everyone thought she was a god and tried to change history? sounds very like an irresponsible time lord to me...

a long shot perhaps, but it nonetheless supports my theory...
