I'm of a similar mind to Tim, at least in terms of wondering if there's even going to be a fourth series (or a fourth series that's recognisably the same as the other three anyway). Being 'promoted' up to BBC1 is a good thing, but they only have one story, five episodes, and it's only on for one week - it's almost as if it was offered as an olive branch to the BBC1 controller when Cardiff were adamant he wasn't getting a series 5 this year.
I do wonder about Torchwood sometimes - they made 13 episodes for Autumn 2006. It then seemed to take 12 months to produce another 13 for January 2008. And now, they've managed only 5 in the same length of time. How do US shows manage to knock out 25+ a year, year in & year out, when the UK struggle to produce 13?

There is no rumour of a new series, no mention anywhere, that I've seen, of new scripts in the pipeline, no talk what-so-ever of there being anything beyond the next 5 episodes. And as Andrew says, the next 5 episodes seem to have been an after thought when the BBC weren't getting a full season of Doctor Who this year.
The making of Torchwood seems to have been fragmented, disjointed & quite frankly it seems to have gone stale. It would not surprise me in the slightest if there wasn't anymore for some time if at all.
In contrast the Sarah-Jane Smith adventures seems to have far more momentum & I can see that going on for a few more years yet.

I would imagine that the two major factors in the future of Torchwood will be the extent to which RTD is prepared to stand up for it and whether or not John Barrowman (who's now more of a light entertainment fixture than an actor) can commit to it. If neither of them is that interested or the dates don't work then it becomes very difficult to put together.
In any case, the BBC might want to wait and see whether Torchwood can fit alongside the Moffat/Smith version of Who before commissioning another run.

I could never really get into Torchwood. I can't take Barrowman seriously as the lead, and the only character I actually liked was Gwen's husband.

The BBFC have passed the final two episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth as certificate 15.
Meanwhile, sort of related:
Torchwood star Eve Myles has announced that she is expecting her first child.
The 31-year-old Welsh actress decided to try for a baby after filming a new five-part special of the Doctor Who spin-off, Children of the Earth, which airs on BBC1 later this year.
"I've wanted to do this for such a long time, but I kept getting job after job after job," said Eve, who plays former police officer Gwen Cooper in the cult series.
"I thought, if I put this off any more I'm going to be 65. My partner and I decided this year was going to be the year, and we were blessed that it happened so quickly.
"It's the best thing that ever happened to me – we're over the moon."
Eve, who is three and a half months' pregnant, joked about the fact that her character Gwen gave birth in series two – to an alien.
"We went for a scan and my mum was there," she recalled. "And my mum went: 'No, it's not a Nostrovite! It's a real Welsh human!' But of course it crosses my mind – I hope it's not an alien!"
Eve added that motherhood will not make her quit her role in Torchwood.
"I hope we get a new series," she said. "I'd really like to play Gwen as a mother. It's not like I have to really save the world – I just have to sit in make-up!"

Good news for our American members:
BBC America have confirmed that Torchwood will hit screens in July, in both the US and UK. In the UK the show will move to BBC One. The show is in 5 segments, with one airing each night of the week.
Writer Russell T Davies says “this series is one big serial and the most ambitious story we’ve ever made, and we’ve got plenty of surprises in store.”
The returning cast includes John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones. Other regular cast involved in their high-octane adventure are Kai Owen as Rhys Williams, Gwen’s husband, and Tom Price as PC Andy.
Special guests in the five part series are Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who, The Thick Of It, Skins), who plays the role of Mr. Frobisher – a civil servant who is hiding a terrible secret, Paul Copely (Coronation Street, The Bill) as Clem – the survivor still haunted by his past, and Liz May Brice (Bad Girls, The Bill) as Johnson – the cynical covert government agent determined to expose Torchwood.

Is that picture the 'standard publicity' shot now, instead of the similar one which had a gun-toting Gwen on it?

Looks like they've got a week and a half to launch the BIGGEST advertising campaign in history! (NB a few posters on the internet is not a big advertising campaing).
