A poster on Roobarbs e-mailed BBC Wales for confirmation regarding the confusion about how many specials there are going to be, here.....
http://www.zetaminor.com/roobarb/showthread.php?t=25306
This was their reply.....
I can confirm in 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.
The full length fifth series will transmit in 2010.
In addition a special episode for Christmas will also be broadcast later this year.

so we're still non the wiser as to weather it's 3 or 4 specials ..

4 Larry. 1 at Christmas in 2008 & 3 specials next year. Whether the 3 includes next Christmas is still unanswered but I would assume that this hasn't been decided yet & if there is to be one next Christmas then it would be extra to what we've been told.

What's that sound I hear? Ah yes, it's Ian Levine sitting back & breathing a sigh of relief, this from OG/DWF.....
Okay, DWM confirms straight from Russell's own mouth that there are five, not four as we feared.
I am absolutely 100% sure and certain that if Russell says categorically in the brand new DWM that there are five Specials, then there are five.
Whilst not the biggest fan of the gap year, I am enormously relieved and happy that we have five Specials - Christmas 2008, Christmas 2009, and three others. At least it feels right. One less felt wrong.
I can sit back, breathe a sigh of relief, and look forward to them, as well as the upcoming Sarah Jane Adventures, eagerly and keenly.
The first reply to the thread had me in stitches......“If my sons did not want wars, there would be none.” - Gutle Schnaper Rothschild

We also know (from the new DWM) that RTD has co-written two of the specials with Gareth Roberts and Phil Ford.

Do you mean RTD+GR+PF for both or RTD+GR and RTD+PF?
-
23rd Jul 2008, 2:04 PM #62
I mean RTD+WTF+FFS plus RTD+OMFG+STFU
Nabbed from elsewhere:
Two will be written by RTD himself with the other two co-written by RTD with Gareth Roberts and Phil Ford sharing writing duties respectively.

So:
RTD
RTD
RTD + GR
RTD + PF
= 10/10.

Also from the new DWM:
It is confirmed that the title of this year's Christmas episode - which will be 60 minutes long - is not "The Return of the Cybermen", as some has surmised from the teaser trailer at the conclusion of "Journey's End". This was merely a teaser description of the episode. It is also confirmed that actors David Morrissey, Dervla Kirawn and Velile Tshabalala will be guest starring in the episode, with Kirwan playing a character named Miss Hartigan. Andy Goddard directs, with Susie Liggat producing/
