I've been dreading this as a fan of Rumpole. RIP John.

I heard about this on the news earlier. I only every saw bits of Rumpole of the Bailey & it never interested me much, it might now that I'm older though.

He had a good innings though.

    RIP Sir John.

He certainly had a good innings, and although I haven't read any of his novels, I did enjoy his adaptation of Brideshead Revisted on the telly.

We've lost a lot of good people this week.

    Si xx

I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

I don't know much about his other work, but I always used to enjoy his Rumpole scripts - it was such an odd little programme in some ways, typically British I think, but with great charm and wit. Judging by the few interviews I saw with him, I reckon John Mortimer was also typically British, with great charm and wit. Glad to hear he passed quietly in his sleep at least.

    RIP.

I seem to remember an interview a year or two back where he seemed to be suffering from a lot of the inconveniences and indignities of old age and was "ready to go", if you excuse the phrase.

Of course it also means that two of the people who gave Leo McKern his most memorable roles have gone within 48 hours.
