Default The music that makes you smile

It's grim times- swine flu, credit crunch, no Doctor Who on the telly... so we all need cheering up.

So, I ask you, what are the songs that as soon as you hear them you smile? What are the songs that instantly improve your mood? And what is it about them that makes you feel better?

There's always 'Reach' by S-Club 7. Yes it's cheesy, but it makes me smile every time I hear it. It's something about the bounciness of the tune and the rising chords, plus the fact that the lyrics are ludicrously optimistic. 'Reach for the stars and your dreams will ALL COME TRUE!' After hearing that five or six times, there's no denying that they're absolutely right, everything is great and all we need to do is REACH.
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

I love listening to the Langley Schools Music Project album. Its school kids singing and playing classics from teh 60's and 70's. The enthusiasm just oozes out and can't help but smile.

Anything by ABBA, Barry White, Diana Ross, in fact, anything seventies.

    Doctor In Distress.

    Yes, it makes me smile.

    There, I've said it.

Brown-Eyed Girl always makes me feel 'peppy' (is that even a word?) but other than it being catchy I don't really know why.

    Another fascinating Curnow anecdote there...

ABBA never fail to make me smile and cheer me up... even their miserable songs just have a way of always brightening my moods. I suppose it's the association with happy memories from childhood that does it in this case.

Abba are very... melancholy as well. So even the sad songs have a way of making you feel as if all the bad things that have happened are somehow part of the tapestry of life, and everything will be alright.

Rather oddly, perhaps, two "albums" that really cheer me up when I'm feeling down are "Buffy - Once More With Feeling", and "South Park - The Movie". Especially sure of getting a smile are "Mountain Town" & "What Would Brian Boitano Do?".
