    Default James Brown Is Dead

What a bit of news for Christmas Day!

Rest In Peace. He was a huge influence on modern music.

    Blimey!

I've just read he only ever had one top 10 hit in Britain. Madness, but his legacy will endure. Rest in peace Jimmy, you were the Funkmaster.

Did anyone ever actually call him "Jimmy"?

We heard "Get Up (I'm A Sex Machine)" a few weeks ago and it's amazing how such an influential song could be so terrifyingly unlistenable.

It's quite incredible someone managed to write a song with no verses and no middle eight.

He was a legend and a genius.

Shame I can't stand his voice or music.

    God rest ye Jimbo Brown.

It's true that he was a jailbird, a tax fraudster and a womaniser. But there was no malice in it.

"I Feel Good" has been sung after every goal Tranmere have scored at home for at least the last ten years and probably more...probably a good 500+ playings there.

As most folk will be aware, though, I know little about the context of popular music so can't add much more.

Phillip sent me an email about this earlier today.. tragic it be. Recently I've been getting into soul music, and James's stuff is a notable favourite.

Funnily enough, a week or so ago I picked up "James Brown's Funky Christmas" for a fiver...

I thought his music, whilst undoubtably influencial, was utterly tuneless and unlistenable.

I have never been a big fan of soul or funk, but James Brown's influence on both genres and popular music in general cannot be denied. Records like 'I Got You', 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag', 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' and 'Sex Machine' must have sounded like nothing before back in the day. He was also an incredible showman too.

Despite this, he was, at best, a flawed genius, and, at worst, a tax dodger, a wife beater and a jailbird - on more than one occasion - and because of this, I think he will be remembered by many with mixed feelings.

Tuneless and unlistenable??! Get some soul!

Musically he will be missed, no doubt about it. RIP.
I must admit, just when I think I'm king, I just begin!

Apparently Spike Lee is making a film about Brown's life.

Should be very interesting if they don't cover it with gloss...

Good lord I never knew, must have slipped under the news radar - I think Christmas day is the only one I'm not news addicted.
