A respectable enough figure, about what I expected.

8.7million is slightly higher than I was expecting. I thought Doctor Who and Emmerdale would both get about 7-8million on overnights... especially with Deal or No Deal in the same slot. At least Doc Martin can no longer claim to be the UK's most popular TV Doctor.

at the end of the day no matter how popular these game shows are doing they are all ways going to finish well down the ratings when they go up against the family programms on Christmas Day..

8.7m and 5th most watched programmis a still very respectable rating that the BBC will be more than happy with-- but Vicar of Dibley most watched programm with 11.4m..

Not bad, but the way they were hyping it you'd expect double figures.

It's all our fault - we missed Who because we were having a quiz, but Mum insisted on watching Dibley.

That's pretty respectable, I thought it would be closer to 10 million, but then bar the soaps and Dibley, the figures for everything else weren't that impressive - I bet the Beeb will be a bit surprised that Little Britain didn't do better.

Oh, and yeah, Dibley the highest rated programme of the day? How did that happen? I thought it did fairly okay ratings wise normally, but i didn't realise it was ever that popular...

    77 … 0.5 ( 2.2%) …. Ricky Gervais Meets... Christopher Guest (22:00) CH 4
I bet C4 will be flummoxed by this one too...

    18 …. 3.6 (25.8%) …. The Green Green Grass (15:00) BBC1
But on the plus side, surely the bbc must cancel this rubbish now...even the Queen got 2 million more viewers!

Good, I reckon we won't be cancelled this year.

8.7m is a cool number of people. Especially when up against Emmerdale.
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

I can't help but feel dissapointed with this rating - on ordinary terms, it's fantastic, but last year there was the suggestion that Who had almost become highlight-of-Christmas-Day new-Only-Fools-and-Horses type 10m chart-topping tradition. Now we're only just surfing above the ratings the last series got back in April (and this, the first episode for half a year) and being trumped by three soaps and a "Vicar of Dibley". I'd hoped for more.

However, it was up against one of the ratings big guns, and got more viewers too. If, for arguments sake, it had been up against Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, it would have probably broken the 10 million barrier. Would Eastenders have fared as well if it had been put up against Emmerdale? Probably not.

It was up against two ratings big guns as Deal or No Deal was also on Channel 4 at the same time.

Channel 4 had given up by the time Corrie, EastEnders and Dibley were on.

So, even more reason to consider 8.7million viewers to be much more than a respectable outcome.

Appreciation Index was 84 (same as the initial Christmas Invasion figure last year).

Solid overnights for the BBC Three repeat as well, considering it was up against the soaps on BBC1/ITV1 and football on Sky Sports 1:

don't think that's quite as good as last years Christmas Special but you still have to pinch your self as it's still hard to believe that our once derided
programm is being shown on prime time christmas day tv and getting such fantastic viewing figures.
