    Default A Musical Challenge

I've heard an advert on radio several times recently - it's like a pub quiz in which one chap is challenging the other to name 7 Number Ones that don't feature the name of the song in the lyrics. He gets stuck after about 4 or 5 - how many can you lot come up with?

You've already got loads that weren't mentioned on the advert! And Bo Rap formed the punchline as he said it first or second, then a couple of others, then repeated it on the grounds it was #1 twice!

"Freak Like Me" doesn't actually contain the title although it comes close...do instrumentals count? In which case the awful "Flat Beat" by Mr Oizo.

The moral of this tale is 'Put the title in the song if you want a number one'. Surely this is the ONLY reason that New Order only got one Number One single in the 80's, with World In Motion.

"The Ballad of John and Yoko". Was that a real number one?
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

I don't like plastic pop, so I barely know any number ones!
Remember, just because Davros is dead doesn't mean the Dalek menace has been contained ......

I don't really know what that means! All kinds of records for lots of different genres have reached Number 1 in the pop charts.

In the advert, they mention "The Ketchup Song!". All the others have been mentioned on here.

    Yes and yes!

If we're including instrumentals, there's the likes of 'Apache', 'On The Rebound', 'Albatross', and 'Amazing Grace', to name just four.

Ernie, the Fastest Milkman in the West by Benny Hill
The Combine Harvester Song by The Wurzels
    Clint Eastwood by Gorrilaz
The Shooting of Georgie by Rod Stewart
The Diary of Horace Wimp by E.L.O. (I think they also had a song with Overture in the title – can’t remember the number though)

I don’t think the last two were number ones, not sure about the third one.

It's actually "The Killing of Georgie" - in the song, he wasn't shot, he was stabbed.

"Albatross"! Although that's cheating I suppose, as its an intrumental!
I must admit, just when I think I'm king, I just begin!

I'm always getting that Rod Stewart song mixed up with Killing and Shooting.

I know it's part of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds but The Eve of War by Justin Hayward doesn't have the title mentioned in the song.

Lord Pedant wishes to point out that the only number one ELO had was Xanadu (and the number was 10538).
