Musical Favouritism
A new thread for PS, let's give it a go and see how we get on.
What you do is post the name of a musical act and the next person has to say which is their favourite song by that musical act, and please say why. Then that person will post a new musical act for the next poster, and so it will go on! Like Question Time, but musically.
The only rule for the thread is that you need to know who the musical act is & not hate everything they've ever done - if you don't like them then don't post, otherwise it's just a waste of everyone's time, isn't it...
Okay, let's go:

"Coz I Luv You" has always been my favourite. I first heard it when watching the film Velvet Goldmine, and I thought it was really catchy, I like the whip cracks and the electric violin...
Favourite Prince song?

When Doves Cry, never was too keen on Prince, but this one caught my ear, loved the crazy buzz saw riff that goes back and forth the speakers.
Next up, Elton John.

I really want to say Rocket Man. Which is a great light pop song, and would be great in anyone elses reportoir.
However I'm not going to, because to do that would be to cruelly ignore the very powerful tribute of the original "Candle In The Wind" to Marylin Monroe. Never liked the "Goodbye English Rose" version, as personally thought the week Di died and Dodi died all became a little overly hysterical. Plus perhaps she deserved a song of her own.
Kylie Minogue.

I can't stand her early stuff with Stock Aitken and Waterman, however, she does have some good stuff in her later repertoire, I particularly liked the strange, dark track she recorded with Nick Cave, The Wild Rose is it? I could listen to some more of that.
Next up, The Pet Shop Boys.

I love the dirty pomp of Get It On. The lyrics are a bit odd, but it's got magic.

I've always been fond of "Thank You For The Music" if only for the great lines like
"I've often wondered
how did it all start
who found out that nothing
can capture a heart?
Like a melody can
well, whoever it was, I'm a fan"
Fabulous!
Rod Stewart.

Hotel California, and has to be the live version. However as to why. It's so hard to say, because it's just plain and simply not just a good song, it's one of the classics. A great melody and touches on some dark aspects ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_California
The lyrics of the song describe the title establishment, a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting; as a metaphor the song may be commenting on drug addiction or simply the decadent lifestyle the hugely successful band had been caught up in. Another theory is that the song is about a mental hospital.
Okay how about ...
The Stranglers next?

"Take me out tonight" partly because it's the only one I know. However I love the way it starts out then slowly changes pace into another tempo, very few songs pull that off so well.
