Don't worry - once I realised how looooooong he was rambling on for, I quickly shut it down and covered it by looking at porn

Geologists hit back at Iain Sunken Smith

The row over a flagship Government employment programme took another twist today when geologists hit back at comments made by a Cabinet minister.

The minister told the BBC: "The next time these smart people who say there's something wrong with this go into their supermarket, ask themselves this simple question: when they can't find the food on the shelves, who is more important: them, the geologist or the person who's stacked the shelves."

The Geological Society of London said it was "surprised" at the comments. Professor Alan Lord, the society's secretary for foreign and external affairs, said it was an "unhelpful way" to frame the argument, adding: "Geologists are a vital part of that supply chain - mining the minerals essential for fertilisers, obtaining metal ores, discovering the fuel which transports produce to the store, and engineering our transport infrastructure.

"Without geologists, there would be no way to supply supermarkets with produce, no transport for customers or staff - no shelves, in fact.

"We would be surprised if Mr Duncan Smith considered geology graduates anything less than equally vital to the economy as those who stack supermarket shelves.

Wow - the Lib Dems are totally shafted, aren't they?

But do we think it serves them right, or are they just hapless and being crucified by the Tory propaganda press?

Would you seriously expect a politician trying to build the reputation of his party to shout from the rooftops 'We've got allegations of groping!'? It may have been the right thing to do, but forcing Rennard to resign due to 'health issues' may have seemed like the right move at the time.

And aren't the NHS issues far more important anyway?

The LibDems were shafted the minute they went into coalition with the Tories. Wavering Tory voters will blame them for all of the things the government didn't manage to do. Wavering Labour voters will blame them for everything they did.

LibDem voters just feel generally let down by the party that promised to change politics.

    Yup. Screwed.

The Conservatives have been manipulating the press from a position of power for decades. The Lib Dems... well, Clegg got in a newspaper once about some speech or other. So the press have been given some great whipping boys to blame for everything that goes wrong.

Clegg is managing to f^c# everything up on his own quite nicely, without any help from the Tories.

I picture Vince Cable sitting in a darkened office, planning some kind of tragic "accident" before the next General Election.....

Today's Eastleigh by-election result will be very telling. Slightly concerned by reports of a large swing to UKIP by many Lib Dem voters.

That is curious, considering the LibDems have historically been the most pro Europe of the major parties. If they're jumping ship to UKIP there's hope for us Eurosceptics (I hate that term).

UKIP and parties of similar persuasions will always do well in a recession, because many (mostly uneducated) people blame immigration for the crisis, and none of the big parties dare touch it with a 20' barge pole.

I think it's fair to say last night's result has increased my dislike of UKIP.

I'm not really surprised that the LibDem's kept the seat. The rise in UKIP support was more than I was expecting but peoples mistrust of the Tories will go on forever (Thatcher's legacy) & the mess we're in is seen as Labour's legacy.
A lot of people are probably still looking for someone, anyone, better than the usual suspects.

If the Tories are stupid enough to force Cameron out before the next election then I'll vote for you... I don't think that will happen though!

So let me get this straight - someone's willing to give me and Steve actual power... Well at least the end will come far more quickly than it's doing so right now...

Watching 'The Dark Knight Rises' isn't a good guide on how to form a Government.

Though to be honest the way things are going in the UK, there's bound to be a few nuggets in there.

Given what Steve does for a living I'd be happy for him to manage the country, whilst you and the lads could be in control of the Ministry of Defence...
