Why on Earth do Biffy Clyro (who only scored one hit because the winner of the X-Factor covered it) get a Best British Group nomination, when the Saturdays don't?

Olly Murs has admitted that he did not think he would be nominated at this year's Brit Awards.

It was revealed yesterday that the former X Factor contestant is in the running for the 'British Single' prize with his number one track 'Please Don't Let Me Go'.

Murs called the recognition "amazing" and said that it feels doubly satisfying because he penned the track himself.

"It's a great achievement for me just over a year after The X Factor - I didn't expect it," The Sun quotes him as saying

"Last year, I was on the X Factor tour [and] we watched JLS win 'Best Single' and it was incredible to see. To have my name on the nominations list is amazing.

"I'm proud because I wrote the song. I'm getting taken more seriously because I wrote 10 of the 12 tracks on my debut album."
Of course you are dear. Let's do some detective work. Wiki:

"Please Don't Let Me Go" is a pop song written by Olly Murs, Claude Kelly and Steve Robson
Don't want to be picky, but it seems he only 1/3rd "penned" the song. So who are these other two bods then?

Kelly has written songs for Kelly Clarkson ("My Life Would Suck Without You")[1] Britney Spears ("Circus")[2] and Chrisette Michele.[3]

Kelly has also written songs for Leona Lewis ("Forgive Me"),[4] Whitney Houston and Fantasia Barrino.
Steve Robson (born November 1969, Jarrow, Tyne and Wear) is an English songwriter, record producer and multi-instrumentalist. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for the song, "What Hurts the Most" co-written with Jeffrey Steele and recorded by Rascal Flatts[1] as well as winning a Brit award[2] and Ivor Novello award[3] for the song "Shine" written with and performed by Take That.[4] Many of his songs have received ASCAP[5][6] or Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI)[7] airplay awards.
It may just be possible that karoke contest winner and hat-bothering tit Murs contributed a little less to the song than the two Grammy-winning songwriters drafted in by Cowell.

Fair play and all for the nomination, but you did not "pen the track yourself".

Back in time I used to care, but I really don't anymore. I haven't heard much from most of the nominees this year.

Quite liked the Plan B album, but that's about it.

Hang on. "You Got The Love" was a hit in 2009! Why is it in the nominations?! She even milked it for a cheapo cover on LAST YEARS Brits!! So how has the original popped up for an award this year?!

Scouting for Bloody Girls? Have you really, really not produced anything better than a song by them this last year. Poor. Really, poor.

The best category is International Female.

But this is 2010. What does it say about how much the organisers have their fingers on the nub of popular music that they have nominated Bruce Springsteen in the Best International Male category and not Justin Bieber? Or Usher?

    Where's Taio Cruz? Or McFly?

There's plenty of great music out there, just none of it is mentioned here.

    Me too.

Weller, THE BOSS, Eminem....really? At least Annie Lennox isn't in the female category.

International Female does look like the most respectable of the categories, and it looks likely Mumford & Sons will win something.

The qualifying period for Brits nominations is an 18 month period, has been for many years.

Even then Wiki says it was first released as a digital single in January 2009, so it's pushing it!

Have they announced this year's 'Outstanding Contribution To Music' yet? It's not Kate Bush, is it?

Outstanding Contribution To Music should go to the legal team that brought down Napster, surely?
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!
