The Doctors that weren't ... and other speculation ...
I remember was it about 2003 and the BIG news that Russell T Davis was going to bring back Doctor Who. Lots of fan speculation.
I remember how angry people were, cos we were going to have the Doctor back, but NO DALEKS cos of the mean Terry Nation estate.
Fast forward 6 years and fans might speculate what the series would have been like without them. Y'know "it's the end of the series, and he's something other than the Daleks".
But also remember the names being passed around for the role?
And this guy was reported to be a shoe-in for the role!
Remember, just because Davros is dead doesn't mean the Dalek menace has been contained ......

I'm so, so glad that Richard E Grant didn't get the role. He was absolutely awful in Scream of the Shalka and wasn't that much better in Curse of Fatal Death either.
Bill Nighy would probably have played the role in exactly the same way he plays every role he plays, as sort of muddled Bill Nighy.

Wasn't one of the actors potentially mooted Hugh Grant?

I really would have liked to see Richard E Grant who is one of those actors I really enjoy seeing. But much like Chris E, I don't think he'd have stuck around.
I also seem to remember a lot of speculation they were going to have the TARDIS as something other than a Police Box - another one of those things you look back on and go "no way".Remember, just because Davros is dead doesn't mean the Dalek menace has been contained ......

And you've no idea how greatful I am the rumours of "ALAN DAVIES" getting the gig never came off.
I probably wouldn't have bothered watching if he was cast.
I can't even watch "QI" because of him. And Stephen Fry... and...
No, stick to the point, we got a great ninth Doctor and the other choices mentioned wouldn't have added much to the series.
It's funny how Bill Nighy gets it in the neck for always playing every role he gets exactly the same... but what about Richard E Grant?

I'm glad it wasn't Richard E Grant, and Alan Davies is OK in Jonathan Creek but nothing special. Bill Nighy would have been interesting, but a bit old I think - assuming he would have had the same scripts as Eccleston got, it's hard to imagine him as the Doctor in those.
I can't remember what other names were in the frame, but I do remember the excitement when we found out late one night - I think James Lindsay beat me to it, in starting a thread for it on the old PS!
