Get ready for 'So Vile a Sin' syndrome

Taken from today's Daily Express (I didn't buy it, I nicked it from the barbers )

The enemies in the Doctor Who series have been wiped out until the show returns at Christmas - but a battle is raging for the programme's latest toys.

Official 5 inch figurines of characters from the cult BBC show, which stars David Tennant as the Doctor, have now become collectors' items and are selling out as fast as they hit the shelves.

Some toy shops have limited purchases to one per buyer and customers have even been seen witing inside shops for the weekly deliveries from supplier Character Options. One figure, the evil Sycorax from the Christmas 2006 show, originally retailed at 7 but is now changing hands on internet auction sites for over 60.

Especially sought after are the new issue models from Seies Three, which include The Doctor, his companion Martha Jones and Dalek Thay, the "last living Dalek". Science-fiction specialist store Forbidden Planet says deliveries could not keep up with demand.

Director Kenny Penman said:" Because of the shortage, our online store is limiting many of the figures to one per customer. Otherwise, some would just end up on eBay at a large premium"
Character Options doesn't seem to be able to get enough product on the market

A worker at Toys 'R' Us megastore in Southampton said : "One man bought an entire box before we had a chance to put them on the shelves "
Maybe they should take them out of the packaging before handing them over - kids won't mind coz they want to play with them; fanboys would be livid !!

P-Bal has a Martha Jones and a Judoon Captain. They are rare beasts, and still sealed.

    Like his Sycorax Leader!

I have all the figs so far except the latest series three figs.
I’m being extremely clever up here and there’s no one to stand around looking impressed! What’s the point in having you all?

I bet they're significantly smaller out of the packaging.

Coming soon, Classic Doctor Who figures...

Launch of “Classic Doctor Who” Range and Trading Update
Character Options, the trading subsidiary of Character Group, is launching a new range of classic Doctor Who figures in association with BBC Worldwide.
The 5” figures will initially feature detailed replicas of classic Doctors, plus a number of monsters. These Doctor Who figures are part of the award winning Doctor Who range that has achieved unprecedented success. The new range will be launched in the spring of 2008.
Jon Diver, Joint Managing Director, Character Group, said: “The resounding success of the Doctor Who TV series is made up of both new and existing Doctor Who fans. We have reacted to public demand and will be producing a range which greatly enhances the depth and quality of our existing line. The classic licence will broaden the collectability and enhance the position of the brand”.
The Directors believe that the development of the Doctor Who brand will give the Group scope for further substantial sales growth of Doctor Who products in 2008.

Damn! You beat me to it by 23 minutes.

Still, there's hope for a 'Stones of Blood' playset yet, with 'screwdriver action' Professor Emelia Rumford, a cliff-edge to dangle Tamm from and a map to Plymouth.

I hope they do a Lalla figure, in the sailor suit.
    And Nimons!

I wonder how realistic they'll be?

And will there be 12" versions?

If they release a Zoe "Krotons" action figure, I'm game.

The most exciting news since Who came back! We've often said "wouldn't it be good if they did a range of classic series figures".

I hope they do all the Doctors, or Colin Baker at least and not just Tom and Troughton like Dapol randomly did.

Apparently they're just concentrating on Doctors where the actors are still alive at the moment (something to do with it being easier to get permission from people who are still around than negotiating at length with someone's Estate), along with some of the monsters, but that might expand later...

There are some characters and monsters (a 1970s Brigadier, Dalek, 1980s Cyberman, Ainley-style Master) which would make sense to begin with because they can be packaged up with different Doctors. I have to say that if I were planning them, I'd look at releasing them in three or four-figure sets to begin with- there's no point releasing, say, an Ace figure in the first wave if you don't bring the Seventh Doctor out for another six months. But story-themed box sets could be very good indeed- I'm no completist but I do have a dozen or so around the place.

They need Pertwee with his arms outstretched with his cape. And one bendable leg.

Convention Tom, with grey hair, overcoat and plastic bag!

Hartnell with whacking stick action, paired with his arch-enemy, Bernard Lee!

The Five Doctors playset! It's obvious. Be Borusa in your own bedroom! Lose your Tom figure in a time eddy!

A Pertwee, Jo, Ice Warrior, Aggedor and Alpha Centauri pack- fabulous! With the Ice Warriors as a single figure to expand.

Obvious to start for a crossover box set though would be Tom, Sarah and K9. Or Pertwee, Delgado and Autons... or Sea Devils.
