I'm not sure of the concept of this thread. Is it just your 5 favourite songs? Or the songs you'd put on a 5 track best of? You'd obviously have to use a commercial sensitivity if the latter. For example my favourite Kirsty MacColl song is "He Never Mentioned Love", but I'd not put it on a Best Of as no-one else would have ever heard of it.

But wouldn't that be the ideal way to introduce others to your favourite song, Si? Surround it with a few others that that they did know already and would listen to anyway? It's a tactic that the music companies have been using for a number of years when issuing 'Best Of..." or "Greatest Hits" compilations.

And anyway, if it's your favourite song surely it would deserve a place on any "Best Of" playlist you'd make up, whether anyone else knew the song or not.

Well if I'm considering including it as a "tactic" that leads me back to my question - am I designing this as a "Best Of" or is it just my favourite songs? Alternatively, to take my argument to the extreme, if my five favourite songs happen to be b-sides, do I include them all?

It's meant to be your 5 favourite songs by a particular artist you like. I'd love to see your Mini Best of for Lorraine Si.

B-sides are all fine - take an artists' entire back catalogue and cut it down to their five best tracks!

Ok, as requested, my Top 5 Lorraine Songs!

    1. LA Stars

It's a "serious" song. But it's dreamy and lovely. "Everybody in LA/Wants to be a star. But it's not who you know..."

    2. Would You Like To Be Buried Or Cremated?

"Do let me know... before you go!". Jolly sing-along tune about death. Particuarly like rhyming of "Coffin" with "Any old thing to go off in"

    3. Nothing Beats The Sound of the Bossa Nova

Love the different musical style sections. "Pop? No, stop!"

    4. Fish Fingers

Simple ode to having nothing in the freezer, and very saucy too. "My wish lingers... with your fish fingers!"

    5. Fun To Be A Fish

Quite throaway but I love this, especially the bubble noises. "If I had a wish, it would be fun to be a fish!"

    Good Song

Well it is their second best song after all (after Beetlebum, of course)

I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

    Suede
    The Wild Ones
    The Drowners
    Trash
    Stay Together
    The Asphalt World

This could reflect the fact that I love Bernard Butler's extending guitar noodling... Trash opened their Royal Albert Hall gig and it was like having a bomb go off, such a great track.

Excellent choices there, Si. Too Much Love...is possibly the weakest of that bunch imo but I love all of those.

I have a soft spot for that song I'm afraid, having seen it through two versions. Freddie's vocal is somehow less genuine but more powerful, and resonates very much with his death.

I've stuck to hits and crowd pleasers and representative of eras rather than personal favourites because it's easier....

    Girls Aloud:

    1. Sound of the Underground
    2. Biology
    3. Something Kinda Ooh
    4. Call The Shots
    5. The Promise

    Spice Girls

    1. Wannabe
    2. Spice Up Your life
    3. Viva Forever
    4. 2 Become 1
    5. Stop

    Kylie

    1. Hand On Your Heart
    2. Better The Devil You Know
    3. Confide In Me
    4. Can't Get You Out Of My Head
    5. I Believe In You

    Madonna:

    1. Like A Prayer
    2. Vogue
    3. Music
    4. Into The Groove
    5. Hung Up

If I was going for personal favourites then it might be different in some case.

    Driving the Last Spike
    Duke' Travel and End
    Not about Us
    Dance on a Volcano

(I suspect we'll never get agreement on this band... )

I've started using some of these lists and Spotify to explore some of the artists I don't really know, so any more additions would be gratefully received.
