    Default Bond @50 - Rate & Review Dr.No

James Bond flies to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of fellow agent John Strangways. While there Bond investigates an interference with American space launches. On the island of Crab Key, Bond and Honey Ryder find the answer to the mystery and come face to face with the diabolical Dr. No.
    Released: October 5, 1962

Bond Girls: Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder; Eunice Gayson as Sylvia Trench.

So this is where it all started... after Ian Fleming's successful novels, of course. It introduces Moneypenny, M and Felix Leiter, as well as everybody's favourite Double '0' Spy. What do you think of James Bond's first outing?

I always want to like this one, but find it rather dull overall. It was probably amazing at the time, but it pales in comparison to what was to come.

I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

I suspect that might be true of a lot of people!

It's an enjoyable enough film, but a little basic compared to what came later. It just doesn't feel like a Bond film, although this could possibly be put down to the musical score by Monty Norman. We only have the original basic James Bond Theme here written by Monty Norman but performed by John Barry, but the remainder of the soundtrack (by Norman) is largely Jamaican and Calypso music, in keeping with the film's setting. While I'm not criticising the musical style, it just doesn't feel like a Bond movie because of it. Possibly the producers thought this as well, considering that they didn't use Norman again (other than the continued use of his theme) and that John Barry would become a regular fixture.

How dare you do this thread without this picture ...

    There - all fixed!

There is a lot to like about this film, and it feels like Bond from the off.

I'm a bit of a Baysan when it comes to Bond: the only two categories for the most part are "Top" and "Good", with perhaps "Never Say Never Again" falling below that if it gets included...

That's why I said: "IF it gets included". Also perhaps why it is the one with the lowest ranking. Though in one sense it is the same as Thunderball, which is canon...

It's certainly as dull as Thunderball

There'll probably be a Never Say Never / Casino Royale Version One poll at some point. depends if we get much discussion around the films that more people remember!

I call the 50's TV movie "version 1", and the 60's film "version 2".
