Default The BF Time Warp 042: The Dark Flame

A thousand years ago, the evil Cult of the Dark Flame infiltrated every star system in the galaxy. In the history books the Cult is legendary, its despotic leader a terrible memory.

But for some the Dark Flame still burns.

For some, its horrifying power is the ultimate goal.

All that is required is for the right people to be in the wrong place and time.

An archaeologist and his robot are on the poisonous world of Sorus Alpha, where they will uncover a hideous relic. The Doctor and Ace are on their way to the deep space research centre Orbos, where Professor Bernice Summerfield is soon to start the countdown to universal Armageddon.

    Four acolytes of Evil.

    Three mad scientists.

    Two companions.

    One Doctor.
What do you think of The Dark Flame?

I've just got my handcuffs and my truncheon and that's enough.

Are you trying to skew the results, Si?

3/5 for me. Not as much fun as Scourge, but still a welcome outing for the 7th/Ace/Benny combo.

    Oooh, coconut macaroons!

Would I do something like that?

I remember nothing about this, except that I remember being unimpressed at the time. Shame because the Doctor, Ace and Benny team is really good- they just didn't get the material to play with

Is this the one where everything that any of the characters has done brings them closer... to The Dark Flame! And that all their adventures are meaningless apart from this one.
Pity. I have no understanding of the word. It is not registered in my vocabulary bank. EXTERMINATE!

Oh. It's THAT one. The one with the nasty Benny Summerfield sequel, yes?

It's not actually the worst play in the world, it's just a total cliche. If you took an average out of all the things that pop up in Doctor Who ever, you'd get this story. It's like a Greatest Hits of much-played songs. Or Now That's What I Call Doctor Who.

Except without Jon Pertwee peeing through a keyhole after Katy locks him in a projector room.
