I'm glad this is actually happening... I was so excited when Waris Hussein unofficially confirmed that this was being developed last year!!

Possibly, although it may get filmed quite soon I wouldn't be surprised if it gets sat on until nearer the actual November anniversary date like they did with the Hollow Crown series for the cultural olympiad and the Bert and Dickie drama which was filmed last summer before finally being broadcast 2 weeks ago.

That said I will be delighted to be proved wrong and I hope I will be but I imagine it'll be worth waiting for!!

Oh I just meant the first proper thing we have to look forward to. I'm pretty sure it won't be on til November.

I don't know why they feel the need to "distance" the project from The Road To Coronation Street. That was brilliant.

    New quotes:
"This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original," said Gatiss. "And how an actor - William Hartnell - stereotyped in hard-man roles became a hero to millions of children.

"I've wanted to tell this story for more years than I can remember! To make it happen for Doctor Who's 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true."

Doctor Who executive producers Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner will also oversee the project, which has been compared to BBC Four's 2010 biopic The Road to Coronation Street.

Moffat said: "The story of Doctor Who is the story of television, so it's fitting in the anniversary year that we make our most important journey back in time to see how the TARDIS was launched."

Not really a surprise, but very welcome news to have it confirmed!!! I hope it's of the same quality as the Corrie one - like you say Si, that was brilliant. It would be nice if the Who one was on BBC One rather than Four, and models itself on the style and tone of the Corrie drama, rather than, say, the bizarre Monty Python drama on Four a little while back.

I bet Gatiss is having a ball writing this thing!!

I like that the BBC "refused to confirm plot details" - despite their secrecy, I feel confident I could have a good stab at roughly what the plot is, don't you?

I bet they end up inventing Doctor Who

By the way, I think they've confirmed it'll be on BBC 2.

Very happy to hear it's on BBC 2. I thought it would have been on BBC Four.
    So... the waiting game starts!

BBC 4's biopic have always been one of the best things they do - should be superb.

I've been past the Wimbledon Studios many a time, usually because it's very near our nearest Wickes and Homebase which I seem to visit with alarming regularity...
