Frazer Hines shot in 2004 for The Story of Doctor Who
He was alright though, I saw him recently.

This story doesn't deserve such great special features / These amazing special features will make The Ice Warriors a DVD release to really look forward to!

Commentary - Episode 3 commentary by Patrick Troughton’s son, Michael.
"You know, I loved my dad, but he was absolutely rubbish in this. I mean! Was he drunk or something? Just embarrassing."

With a certain Mr. F. Hines aboard, the full version must've lasted 17 months then!

The animation is interesting. It's simpler than the last couple of animated episodes- not as showy and stylish, instead going for an authentic feel- working closely from the camera scripts. It's admirable, but it seems a bit cheaper overall. Some of the movement is very basic, lots of wiggly arms and perhaps too many raised eyebrows and darting eyes. Hmm, I suppose it all works- it just seems a little bit of a backward step.

It just looked cheap to my eyes, like all those efforts you see fans doing on Youtube. I think The Tenth Planet animation is the best of the new lot of animated episodes- it's stylish without being overly stylish, if you see what I mean.

What a bloody awful story! To be fair, things picked up a bit by Part Six but GOD. It's just various people running between the Base and the Ship and musing about what to do if the computer (some kind of futuristic Russell Grant) doesn't advise that they do something. To be fair, I liked Clent, he was quite layered as these base commander types go, but the rest of it was just weird or dull or both. Troughton's had much better moments and "The Seeds of Death" is miles better.

It's a turgid old story isn't it? As with may stories, you wonder how it got its reputation as one of the good ones. Was it a good Target book? Fond memories of those who saw it in 1967? That it had some iconic photos taken? Well whatever it was, everyone was broadly wrong about it!
