We have the Christmas 1965 edition of the Eagle, today, which celebrates the dogs which saved many lives during WW2 by sniffing out landmines...

Biffo was the cover star for years when I was young, before Dennis took over the cover slot. Dennis was on the back page then, iirc

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 (so about 1978) my Uncle let me and bruv have a huge stack of his old Beanos - most of them had Biffo on the front cover, and it seemed really strange to us.
By the way, I haven't commented much, but I'm really enjoying this latest run of covers Mac - always interesting to see what you come up with!

Does anyone know whether the comics or the toys came first? I certainly wouldn't have put the toys existing pre-1980, let alone 1970 or before.

I think it would have been the toys first, as this comic was a licensed product published by DC...
Just checked it out, the first set of 16 cars were released in 1968.

The first ever spin-off from Mad today, on sale around Christmas 1953. Panic lasted around two years and was published by (Mad's original publishers) EC Comics who would become better known for their horror anthology titles such as Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror...
