    Default The Athletics Thread

Did anyone watch the European Indoor Championships (from a packed National Indoor Arena in Birmingham) on TV over the weekend?

It was an excellent three days for Team GB (hate using that!) as they won 4 golds and topped the medal table (ten in total: four gold, three silver, three bronze).

Jason Gardner won the 60 metres for the fourth time, with Craig Pickering second.

Robert Tobin, Dale Garland, Philip Taylor and Steve Green were awarded gold in the 4x400m Relay after Germany were disqualified - following Bastian Swillims's push on Russia's Artem Sergeyenkov in the last lap.

Phillips Idowu led a British one-two in the Triple Jump, with Nathan Douglas claiming silver.

Superb gold from Nicola Sanders in the 400m with a winning time of 50.02 seconds - the fastest time in the world this year and a new British and Commonwealth record. Will she be able to go on and run sub-50 seconds? Possibly attempt to beat Kathy Cook's British record of 49.43 (set way back at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984)?

Kelly Sotherton pushed the mighty Carolina Kluft all the way in Friday's Pentathlon before finishing only 17 points behind with a silver medal.

Martyn Bernard took bronze in the High Jump.

Robert Tobin claimed bronze in the 400m. Won by defending champion David Gillick with a new Irish record of 45.52 seconds.

Nicola Sanders, Emma Duck, Kim Wall and Lee McConnell won bronze in the 4x400m Relay with a new national record of 3:28.69.

There were also encouraging performances from Kate Dennison (Pole Vault), sprinters Ryan Scott and Jeanette Kwakye (7.17s in her 60m semi-final) and Marilyn Okoro (800m).

Did BBC Sport get carried away with their coverge of the GB team?

Are we now on track for 2012?

Or will it be the same old story of a promising young team failing to achieve much in the future? (look what happened to Christian Malcolm and Mark Lewis-Francis).

P.S. Russia didn't even send their strongest team and still managed to win 15 medals!

I watched it for Kelly Sotherton. Good stuff from her - she's getting closer to the Kluft all the time, but still not quite close enough... give her time, though...

It was a good haul for the Brits, but it's funny, though, how we always 'appear' to do well in Athletics tournaments in which the Americans, Australians and Africans are not involved...

    Give Sotherton time!!

She's about ten years older than Kluft, isn't she?

Young Jessica Ennis could take Kluft at the 2012 Olympics. She'll be 26 and in her prime by then. Kluft will be 29 (also in her prime) and Sotherton will be 35!

    Kluft looks about 40!

I reckon Sotherton's still got plenty in her engine.

Sotherton wins heptathlon bronze at the World Athletics Championhips and Ennis finished fourth.

Kluft still reigns supreme and Sotherton still needs to sort out her javelin technique.

Marlon Devonish did really well to make the 100m finals, but it looks like it's a duel between Tyson Gay and Jamaica's Asafa Powell. Devonish will probably finish fourth.

Jo Pavey just failed to sneak the bronze medal in yesterday's women's 10,000m.

Didn't want to jinx Sanders by mentioning her first sub-50 seconds run in the World Athletic Championships 400m semis the other day, but...

The 23-year-old, whose one-year ban for missing three out-of-competition tests expired earlier this month, had looked out of contention on the back straight.

But she ran a superb final 100m to win on the line in 49.61 seconds.

    Great stuff, there!

Shame I've missed all the Sotherton action this time round.

Mind you, I did get to see Yelena Isinbayeva in the polevault the other day...

Forget about Sotherton (she's too mouthy these days), Jessica Ennis is peachier and wears even smaller shorts.

The wonderfully named US 100m hurdler LoLo Jones also caught my eye this week.

Sotherton's always been mouthy - that's one of the things I like best about her!

Although to be fair, it looks more likely that 'peachy' Ennis will go further in the future - but does she have what it takes to take on The Kluft...?

Good to see Paula Radcliffe back running and winning the New York Marathon:

She also beat her long-time rival Gete Wami (does she follow Paula everywhere? ) with a sprint finish.

Is it too early to think of Olympic Gold? Or will the Beijing smog destroy her?

Isn't Paula Radcliffe a bit too English for you to be pleased about her victory, James?

At least I didn't actually congratulate her. Just said it was good to see her running and winning again, or something.

I'd only be happy to see her lose if Motson/Lineker/Wright/Hansen/Pearce/Green or ITV Sport were covering it!

Bolt beats the previous best of 9.74 set by compatriot Asafa Powell...

Jessica Ennis (and her tiny shorts) are out of the Olympics. So with Kluft choosing not to defend her title, Kelly Sotherton will have to find somone else to finish second to.

So does that mean Sotherton actually has a chance, then?

Ennis is on the brink of winning Heptathlon gold (if she can make it round two laps) at the World Championships. Only the 800m to go... and she's one of the fastest runners in the competition.

Also looking forward to an epic* men's 100m final.

    * hopefully

    9.58

Gay set a new US record with 9.71 and Bolt still spanked him!

Even Chambers managed 10 seconds dead in sixth place.

Great celebrations from Germany's Robert Harting, when he won discus gold, and Jamaica's Brigitte Foster-Hylton, after winning the 100m hurdles final. Ireland's Derval O'Rourke doing well to finish fourth. Shame that Lolo Jones wasn't there, though.

Jenny Meadows wins bronze in the 800m. An event which brought us today's OMFGGG!! big news!!
