Mark Gatiss

Having read both of his novels earlier this year, I was curious to find out who else had read them, and what they thought of them.
I personally found The Vesuvius Club the best of the two. it was mucm more original, witty, clever, and very Gatiss like.
I found that The Devil in Amber was almost silly at times, and felt a little forced. Still a great read though.
I really do like his main character as well!!

What did everyone else think?

I've read them both and thoroughly enjoyed them both. They're very Mark Gattis- I know they're supposed to be the adventures of Lucifer Box, but I can just hear Mark Gattis reading them to me as I read them!

They're funny, rude and great fun.

I was only reading 'The Vesuvius Club' the other week and it's pretty much as described- it's a nice twist for Lucifer to be quite so amoral but yes, it's like a collision of the League of Gentlemen and 'Adam Adamant Lives!'.

I loved The Vesuvius Club to pieces, but felt a little disappointed by The Devil In Amber, it was very good, but didn't quite reach the heights of TVC imo. Gatiss has a great knack of doing the unexpecting and making both books very enjoyable to read though, and I certainly hope the character will return - I'd love to see a film version, though can't imagine it happening due to the cost mainly.

Ah shame you didn't like Devil in Amber quite as much. I actually thought it was better. The plot was much tighter, I thought and I quite liked Box as a middle aged guy. The themes and influences of both books are quite different though. Vesuvius Club borrowing from Sax Rohmer and HG Wells whilst the Devil in Amber is pure Dennis Wheatley.

I did really like it, but just not quite as much as I loved The Vesuvius Club. And I know what you mean about the plot, it was a lot tighter and a lot more fun in a lot of ways, but the novel didn't surprise and delight me in quite the same way as VC did. But again, it's a great novel, I just prefer the first one a little more!
