It would be an awfully embarrassment if the BBC's celebrations of 50 Years of Doctor Who weren't allowed to include the first story. I wonder whether it's to do with negotations over broadcasting the restored/VidFired version, rather than the story itself. Who knows, maybe we'll get the murky misty version we loved so much in 1981!!

That would be my guess, the music rights. Although isn't there a time limit on how long you can get money for music. It used to be quite a short time (relatively) but there was a move to have it extended.

I've just looked it up; as with copyright in general, things are slightly (!) confused. There's a 70 year statute on scripts, which allows the copyright to be held by the family for the author's life plus a further 70 years. However, the BBC's rights to the programme are about to run out - copyright on programmes run out at the end of the calendar year in which it's first broadcast. There's also a similar 50-year clause on music, so the copyright may have run out on John Smith already, and they should be safe on the programme for now, but this may be why we're getting the new version - so that the copyright can be renewed.

You see, the thing about the sonic screwdriver is that it wouldn't akshually werk... though if it did, it would be one of my wunders of the Universe.

It's very badly written. I can't tell if One Direction are appearing WITH Doctor Who or just on the same bill!

The BBC have also announced Doctor Who: Greatest Monsters & Villains Weekend on BBC Three which begins on Friday, 15 November at 7pm. Details below:
The fantastic foes that have gone up against our time-traveling hero in his first-half century are a huge part of Doctor Who. By turns scary, funny, iconic, thrilling and on occasions charismatic, they help define the show’s enduring appeal and fifty years after the Daleks were created, the monsters of Doctor Who remain an integral part of what makes the series so special. Doctor Who: Greatest Monsters & Villains Weekend will be a marvellous salute to those baddies who have blighted the Doctor’s life and added so much excitement to ours.
