And so we reach the Matt Smith era, with his first full (and only, alas, unsplit) series.



The Doctor meets Amelia Pond, then meets her all grown up as Amy Pond and takes her round the universe the night before her wedding to Rory. Wherever they go there's a mysterious crack and silence will fall and mentions of the Pandorica opening. Rory joins for a bit then is killed (several times) befor eturning up as a Roman at Stonehenge where the Pandorica is waiting for its occupant.

I think that's right anyway!

Time of the Angels/ Flesh and Stone for me, with Amy's Choice very close behind.
Both really good stories, but I think the former is the best 'weeping angels' story. Even much more-so than Blink.

Vincent And The Doctor is the only episode from this series that I could bear to watch again.

The Eleventh Hour is a beautifully shot, great fun story. It's my favourite Steven Moffat script for the series. I love it to bits.

I must confess that although I enjoyed it at the time, I've not rewatched many of these - other than The Eleventh Hour, bits of the Angel two-parter and the final episode, I've a feeling I've only ever seen the rest once... and sadly season 6 didn't encourage me to go back and look at season 5. On the plus side, I'm sort of looking forward to revisiting the Smith era at some point to see how my opinions may have changed when we (finally (hopefully)) know how it all ties up.

But for all that, I don't really feel that my choice would change. Although we're now all a bit weary of time-hopping and the like, it was still sufficient of a novelty in 2010 for me to be totally won over by the finale. Pandorica Opens (from memory) is a belter of an episode, with the very neat twist at the end being that after all the speculation of what was IN the Pandorica, it turns out to be what's GOING IN that is important... and The Big Bang is one of the modern era's best episodes, with Smith arguably giving his best performance to date. I genuinely think that even in 50 years time, when Who fans are gathered round discussing 'the classic new series' on their tablet-o-implants (or alternatively, when we're all in some home somewhere still using our PCs) Smith's performance in this episode will still be hailed as one of the best 'Doctor bits' ever. When he's saying goodbye to Amy just before heading off in the Pandorica, and then when he's talking to the sleeping Amelia, and he just seems to be an old old man slowly winding down.... just extraordinary.

Plus, he wears a fez now. Fezzes are cool.

This was the last season I really enjoyed, for the most part, from start to finish. It's a hard choice with several stand-out episodes, but I think Amy's Choice just beats Vincent for the moment.

Really? I overall really disliked this series. Which is ironic, because I loved Season 4, and thinking about it, really got to loving season 6 as well. But this one is a weird season, because overall, I felt those stories were "just okay".

One problem I had is there was just too much arc in there. The Angels story about mid-way into part 2 is no longer about the Angels, but Amys crack. Likewise for the Silurian story. And then there's killing of the characters - Moffat kills Rory, then kills Amy and blows up the Tardis. OMG that's so dramatic, but then they all come back.
