Not much is known about this - but the BBFC have some exciting details about the Coming Soon trailer which has appeared on the Moonbase:

Rumour has it that the animation has been halted...
If true, WHAT COULD IT MEAN?!?!?

*First in with the "The Underwater Menace Is A Lost Classic" before the DVD of TUM has been released to prove this.

...and yet we still got 'Coming Soon The Underwater Menace' rather than the more logical 'Coming Soon The Web Planet'. What could that mean?

It could mean the previous animations haven't sold too well... it could mean it's all back... it could mean they just don't want to invest in further animations... It could mean anything!

It could mean that the BBC decided that a telesnap reconstruction is a cheaper than and just-as-acceptable option to animation after all...
Or it's all back.
But, at this stage, the halting of the animation is all rumour. Time will tell, as always...

It could mean they're going to animate Web of fear episode 3 first instead.

Excuse me if I sound a little dim or ignorant, but is it the sentence 'This work is made up of a number of separate components' which is causing the intrigue here? Also - and again if it seems I don't quit get it - many of you have seen the trailer I presume, does that not answer any questions?

Dunno if this has been mentioned on another thread, but apparently, according to DWM, BBCWW are releasing this on dvd with just recons of the missing eps, not even animations.
Well that was worth waiting all that time for!

I have an unfortunate cynical feeling that they're releasing it now "because the fans want it" (ie. because they bought The Web Of Fear by the vanload), and they're going to do a special edition sometime in the future, with animation (or whatever be available depending on the voracity of The Blessed Omnirumour) and appropriate features. I also unfortunately have a feeling there's going to be special editions of Web and Enemy at some point, since they weren't even vanilla releases.

Unless they have found those bloody episodes, the DVD range is going to come to an ignominious, drawn out end. We'll all suffer!

Pup ltd (Dan Hall's production company) are no longer working on the Doctor Who DVD range. This is why there were no extras for the most recent releases and why there will be none for The Underwater Menace or any further animations of missing episodes.
I cannot however offer any explanation as to why TUM has not been released before now.

The latest news doesn't look good: despite Amazon taking up preorders, the Doctor Who Worldwide and other websites offer a quote from Steve Roberts -
Well, we're the team that remasters the episodes for DVD release and even we don't have a clue what's happening with TUM now. From where we're standing, it's looking like the [DW] range is dead.

2nd Dec 2014, 6:48 PM #17DWO got in touch with BBC Worldwide today to enquire about the DVD release of 'The Underwater Menace'. Here's what they said:"BBC Worldwide hope to release ‘Doctor Who: The Underwater Menace’ in 2015. We delayed the release to ensure that our publishing schedule is phased appropriately across the year and the missing episodes from the story will be animated."

I don't know whether to feel ecstatically happy or very afraid...

I'm ecstatically happy that they managed to phase their publishing schedule across the year.

Could it be coming soon (again?) BBC Worldwide have just tweeted:
We're hoping to release more classic Doctor Who and we'll let you know when we have news.

Confirming what's printed in the DVD history article in the new DWM, then.

That news story isn't quite right - the DWM article does say the planned release had been abandoned (which I think we already pretty much knew) and said that no official response had yet been given to the online petition. So I think Doctor Who News is a bit misleading, since it reports it as though a decision has just been made... whereas in fact I'd say that's just a recap of where we've been for some time now.
I'd be amazed if in some way, shape or form it doesn't get released... but whether it'll be a form that satisfies fans in quite the same way as an edition with the two missing episodes animated, I wouldn't like to say!
