Classes disrupted as teachers stage strike

NUT members across England and Wales are staging a day of strike action.

Pupils in England and Wales are facing disrupted classes as teachers join rallies and picket lines in a strike over pay, pensions and conditions.

The NUT has been embroiled in its current dispute with the government for more than two years.

But NUT general secretary Christine Blower told the BBC that the talks had not produced the right outcomes and that teaching was becoming "unmanageable" with primary school teachers working 60-hour weeks and secondary school teachers working 56 hours.

"We don't feel that enough progress has been made, actually we feel that no progress has been made," she said.

Ms Blower said the union would go back to the talk after this strike.

She admitted that strike action was "regrettable" and said: "We do recognise the fact that young people are having their education disrupted and that parents are experiencing difficulties today."

I remember the teachers striking in my day for roughly similar reasons. Much as the days off were appreciated at the time, having done some teaching since, I can appreciate the need for wanting to be able to have enough time to get up before you went to bed. So many people complain about the hours that junior doctors do, but teachers' hours go unreported. You try getting all that marking done in ten minutes! never mind supervising breakfast clubs, lunchtime and after school activities, sports days...

Not all the teachers - our place was open as normal today, while number 1 son had to be home alone as his school had shut except for exam groups.

Very little reporting on this in the mainstream media, although I caught a small biased piece on ITV News focusing on people having their journey to work disrupted because of all the striking/marching teachers. Shameful.

Respect too all, and any teachers who were striking today, good on you.
