Default The Clocks go forward for British Summer Time this Weekend!!

Despite a century of changing the clocks in Britain, there is still mystery and confusion surrounding why we do it and when.

It's that time of year again, where people spend weeks trying to remember how to reset all the clocks in the house and ponder whether it's safe to trust the automatic clock change on your mobile phone.

The clocks change this weekend as the country enters British Summer Time.
The clocks go forward by one hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March - meaning this Sunday, March 30.

The clocks go back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October, to Greenwich Mean Time. This year the clocks will go back on October 26.

Why do we change the clocks?

British Summer Time (BST), also known as Daylight Saving Time, was first proposed by William Willett in 1907. The keen horse rider was frustrated by the "waste" of daylight in the early mornings during the summer months.

He published a pamphlet called The Waste of Daylight, outlining plans to change the clocks and get people out of bed earlier, before spending the rest of his life campaigning for the scheme.

It was finally introduced in 1916 - a year after Willett's death - with The Summer Time Act of 1916, and the first day of the first BST was May 21.

What are the benefits of changing the clocks?

Germany first introduced the idea of changing the clocks in the summer, with Britain quickly following suit in a bid to save fuel and money during the First World War.

Today, many people claim an extra hour of sunlight is good for your health and helps those who suffer from seasonal affected depression.

Some also believe it saves energy and reduces road accidents and crime.

And if you didn't get it earlier

Grief, it's bad enough having the shorter nights, let alone having to let The Lads out even later...
