only 12 runs ahead and 5 2nd inning wickets still standing looks my my 5-0 prediction should be confirmed by the end of tomorrows play.

Pietersen's gone already! That's only the third ball of the morning.

Edited to add: Still no runs today and Panesar's just been run out...

all out for 147 another pathetic and embarrassing performance the Aussies need 46 to win so it should be all over in about another hour,

This comment on TMS sums it up:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cric...nd/6232903.stm

From Smashy in York, TMS inbox: "After KP was out I returned to a re-run of the Old Grey Whistle Test from 1975, and saw a guitar solo from Lynrd Skynrd which lasted much longer than any of our batsmen."
That 'Freebird' solo lasted about fifteen minutes.

Not really - we were well beaten in the first test in 2005 but went on to win the series...

Plus, nothing against Bell or Cook, but Trescothick and Vaughan were around at that point.

I was at the Melbourne and Sydney tests. Yes they were a depressing sight, but the atmosphere was electric. I have only praise for The Barmy Army, who managed to keep the spirits of all the England fans up, even in the darkest moments!
One Day, I shall come back, Yes, I shall come back,
Until them, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties, Just go forward in all your beliefs,
and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine!

Peter Skellern and Richard Stilgoe wrote a song about the Barmy Army. The general tone is...

It isnt easy when your team
Makes a nightmare out of a dream
...and having to put up with losing by four runs to "the might of Lichtenstein".

One-day series, Hobart: England 206-7 (49.5 overs) beat New Zealand 205-9 (50 overs) by three wickets

Andrew Flintoff made an unbeaten 72 as England squeezed home by three wickets against New Zealand in Hobart.

Unfortunately, Vaughan's torn a hamstring (if it's not one thing...) Northants's Mal Loye is taking his place in the squad, and the captaincy debate's been reopened...

Poor old Vaughan seems to have no luck as for the captaincy unfortunantly it'll probably be given back to Flintoff which for me is a bad idea,.

Well I'm happy. England have finally shown that with enough cricket they could have done better in the ashes & that the preparation was dismal at best. They got in trouble in the ODI triangular series & it got to the point where if England lost another game they were coming home. But it came down to fight & fight they did. They beat New Zealand & then had to beat Australia to make the final. This they did & then they beat Australia in the first final & then in a rain affected game they beat Australia again to win the whole thing. Talk about fighting back from the brink!

This is good preparation for England for the World Cup in three weeks time but not for Australia. What a shame for them.

Try as I might, I really can't feel any sympathy for Australia at all. Mind you, I'm still in shock that we got to the final in the first place.

Quite touching to see the lad on Junior Mastermind tonight taking Andrew Flintoff as his specialist subject- seems as if that kind of hero-worship isn't quite dead just yet.

Caught the trophy presentation yesterday, which was a bit of a giggle- Mark Taylor and Ricky Ponting having a fairly good-humoured "OK, we lost, you won" approach and then the Cricket Australia suit and the CEO of Commonwealth Bank with faces like a pair of smacked bottoms. Particularly the latter, as her bank has just ploughed thousands of dollars into a series which Australia conspicuously failed to win.

Think the technical term for our boys is jammy sods... still, always nice to get one over the Aussies, especially in light of this Winter in general.
