Live coverage of the first hour of England's Ashes defence in Australia drew more than 500,000 viewers on Sky Sports 1 last night.

The first day of England's hotly anticipated battle to retain the coveted cricket trophy began at midnight, with Australia batting in the first Test in Brisbane.

On Sky Sports 1 the first hour of play in Brisbane bowled over all rivals except BBC1's repeat of the film Pleasantville, which averaged an audience of around 800,000 viewers.

The live cricket attracted an average of 529,000 viewers across the hour from midnight, with a peak of 595,000 in the first quarter hour as England opening bowler Steve Harmison's radar went sadly awry.

Earlier in the evening, BBC2's new travelogue, Oz & James's Big Wine Adventure, got off to a corking start, according to unofficial overnights.

Mingling elements of Two Fat Ladies and Top Gear, the clash of characters show revolved around "wine ponce" Oz Clarke's attempts to educate Top Gear presenter and "terrible scruff" James May about wine.

Big Wine Adventure drew an average of 2.6 million viewers in the hour from 8pm, against Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House, which scored 2.5 million.

The first two half-hour episodes of Oz & James's Big Wine Adventure were shown back-to-back, giving the audience a chance to fully appreciate the humour of the two battling presenters.

Oz and James peaked at 3.1 million viewers, before the audience fell away with the arrival of sci-fi series Torchwood at 9pm.

Torchwood pulled in an average of 2.3 million viewers against 3.7 million for BBC1's new surgical series The Brain Hospital.

Both were cut down by ITV1's jungle juggernaut, I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, which averaged 8 million viewers, a 37% share.

Also in the 9pm slot, Young@Heart, Channel 4's critically-acclaimed documentary about a chorus of pensioners, drew 900,000 viewers; beaten by Five's film repeat Snake Eyes, starring Nicolas Cage, which attracted 1.2 million.

That's up slightly on last week's figures.

have to say the over all figures for Torchwood have been very encouraging considering the two channels it's being shown on and the BBC will I think be reasonably happy.

I think that's a difficult one to gage I have no idea what the average viewing figures are for programms shown on BBC 2 but Iwould suspect the figures for Torchwood are pretty much the norm for a program that was shown on BBC3 only a couple of days before.

It's BBC2's highest-rated drama of 2006...so far.* Tsunami: The Aftermath or the This Life special might top it, though.




* BBC2 have only shown about 5/6 dramas all year.

Premiership brings 3m to Sky

The top of the table Premiership clash between Manchester United and Chelsea brought nearly 3 million viewers to Sky Sports 1 yesterday afternoon, attracting probably the biggest multichannel audience of the year.
Manchester's 1-1 draw with Chelsea was watched by 2.95 million viewers during live match coverage on Sky Sports 1, between 4pm and 6pm, according to unofficial overnights.

The audience peaked at 3.426 million viewers on the quarter hour from 5.30pm, as Chelsea chased an equaliser towards the end of the match.

During the two hours of live coverage from 4pm, Sky Sports 1 was the most watched channel - beating BBC1's EastEnders omnibus, which drew 2 million viewers, and Robin Hood repeat, which attracted 2.1 million.

On ITV1, Abba - the Reunion was watched by 2 million viewers and All Star Family Fortunes drew 2.4 million.

Man Utd v Chelsea matches have now usurped the Manchester side's meetings with Arsenal as the most popular live football on Sky Sports.

In November 2005, Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford in the Premiership also provided the year's biggest multichannel audience, with 3 million viewers watching Man Utd's 1-0 victory.

Manchester's last Premier League match against Arsenal attracted 1.9 million viewers to Sky Sports 1 in September.

Elsewhere yesterday in multichannel, Torchwood snuck home just ahead of Lost in the battle of the dramas at 10pm.

BBC3's Doctor Who spin-off attracted 1.144 million viewers over 50 minutes from 10pm, according to unofficial overnights.

Lost's audience held up well for the third episode of the third run on Sky One, following last week's double bill to launch the series.

Last night's instalment of Lost drew 1.094 million viewers in the 10pm hour, compared with 1.4 million for last Sunday's series opener.

Anything over 1 million viewers is a big audience for multichannel and Sky One insiders can also point out that their network is available in several million homes less than BBC3, as it is not distributed on Freeview.

But Lost and Torchwood squeezed other Sunday 10pm shows in what is now one of the most competitive multichannel slots of all.

ITV2's Entourage attracted 107,000 viewers from 10pm; and BBC4's Planet Earth spin-off, Planet Earth - the Future, drew 181,000.

On ITV3 The Best of the Royal Variety was watched by 240,000 viewers; while ITV4's movie repeat The 13th Warrior drew 300,000 between 9pm and 11.05pm.

Viewers were also treated to a double helping of CSI at 10pm last night, with a CSI: Miami repeat attracting 325,000 viewers to Five US; while on Living TV a edition of the original CSI drew 142,000.

Yesterday evening, Sky One's Cirque de Celebrite continued with 454,000 viewers between 7pm and 8.30pm; against a repeat of Saturday's edition of The X Factor on ITV2, which drew 487,000; and another chance to see the previous day's Robin Hood on BBC3, which attracted 248,000.

On Saturday night, another of Sky One's big hopes for the autumn, The Big Idea, a business reality show featuring The Apprentice's Ruth Badger as a judge, ended its seven-week run with a whimper.

The final instalment of The Big Idea attracted just 24,000 viewers on Sky One between 9pm and 10pm.

It also looks like Torchwood and Lost both outrated Channel 4/Five in the 10pm slot.

Channel 4 ran a repeat of the movie Ghostbusters from 8pm, attracting 1.7 million viewers and a 7% share.

From 10pm on Channel 4, Madonna: Confessions Live from London drew 900,000 viewers and a 6% over an hour and three quarters.

Channel Five's Victoria Cross Heroes was watched by 1.1 million viewers and had a 4% share from 8pm; then on the same network a repeat of the movie Ali pulled in 1 million and 6% over three hours from 9pm.

obviously on BBC3 Torchwood is never going to better the two main terrestrial channels but it certainly seems to be competing well against the other Sky/Freeview channels..Which at the end of the day Isuppose the BBC are looking at.

BBC3's Torchwood pulled ahead of Sky One's Lost in the big multichannel ratings battle last night.

Torchwood was watched by 971,000 viewers on BBC3 from 10pm, up slightly from last Sunday's 958,000, according to unofficial overnights.

Sky One's Lost premiere slipped below 1 million viewers for the first time this series, attracting 863,000 viewers last night in the 10pm hour.

Also in the 10pm slot, ITV2's Entourage drew 86,000 viewers, while on Five US a CSI: Miami repeat attracted 199,000, and at the same time on Living TV another chance to see an episode of CSI pulled in 109,000.

The biggest rating multichannel show of the day was Sky Sports 1's live coverage of Arsenal's visit to Stamford Bridge for a Premiership tie with Chelsea.

Sky Sports 1's live coverage of the 1-1 Premiership draw between Chelsea and Arsenal attracted an average of 2.7 million viewers between 4pm and 6pm, with a peak of nearly 3.2 million in the quarter hour from 5.30pm.

Two weeks ago Chelsea's 1-1 premiership draw with Manchester United attracted 2.95 million viewers on Sky Sports 1 - almost certainly the biggest multichannel audience of the year.

Other top rating multichannel shows yesterday included a new episode of The Simpsons on Sky One from 6.30pm, which drew 1.185 million viewers.

Immediately following The Simpsons on Sky One, the penultimate episode of reality show Cirque de Celebrit attracted 481,000 viewers between 8pm and 9pm.

Cirque de Celebrit was up against a repeat of Saturday's X Factor on ITV2, which drew 458,000 viewers.

Sky One's seasonal family drama Terry Pratchett's Hogfather attracted the biggest audience for a homegrown show on the channel ever last night.

The heavily promoted two-hour drama, starring David Jason, attracted an average of 2.4 million veiwers from 8pm, according to unofficial overnights. Hogfather's audience peaked at 2.8 million over one quarter-hour period.

Last night's Hogfather was the channel's second-highest rated show to date - behind an episode of American comedy Friends, which attracted 2.8 million six years ago - and its popular ever UK-commissioned programme.

Hogfather was also the fourth highest-rated show between 8pm and 10pm across any network last night, beaten only by ITV1, BBC1 and BBC2.

Sky One had a good night elsewhere, with a new episode of US drama Lost between 10pm and 11pm scoring 1.1 million viewers, while the final of reality talent show Cirque de Celebrit pulled in an average of 643,000 viewers from 7pm, peaking at 838,000.

ITV1 won the Sunday evening ratings battle, with Heartbeat at 8pm attracting 8.2 million viewers and a 32% share, and terrestrial movie premiere Driving Lessons at 9pm scoring 6.5 million and a 28% share.

On BBC1, Incredible Animal Journeys at 8pm pulled in 3.1 million viewers and a 12% share, while drama Born Equal at 9pm attracted 3.8 million and a 16% share.

The UK snooker championship final on BBC2 over three hours from 8pm drew 2.6 million viewers and an 11% share.

On Channel 4, terrestrial movie premiere The Core picked up 1.7 million viewers and a 7% share between 8pm and 10.30pm.

Channel Five's movie repeats double bill saw Jackie Chan's First Strike at 7.30pm pull in 1.5 million viewers and a share of 6%, and In the Line of Fire at 9pm attract 1.4 million and a 7% share.

The other multichannel outlets could not compete with Sky One when Hogfather was on air, with ITV2 the nearest challenger with a repeat of the previous night's The X Factor final.

ITV2's repeat of the main The X Factor show between 7pm and 8.30pm drew 438,000 viewers, while the results show at 8.30pm attracted 554,000. A repeat of the The Xtra Factor Finale at 9.30pm picked up 315,000 viewers on ITV2.

On Five US, a CSI repeat at 8pm pulled in 228,000 viewers, while CSI:NY repeat at 9pm picked up 207,000.

On E4, a Friends repeat at 8pm drew 261,000 viewers, while a second instalment at 8.30pm attracted 349,000.

Torchwood drew 900,000 viewers on BBC3 from 10pm, losing out to Sky One's Lost.

Earlier in the day, Five's repeat showing of the 1992 festive movie Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York proved a ratings cracker, pulling in 3.6 million viewers and a 17% share between 5.15pm and 7.25pm.

The movie was the highest rated show on any channel for 75 minutes between 5.30pm and 6.45pm.

Five has a knack of attracting big ratings for old festive movies at this time of year on Sunday afternoons.

Last year, The Wizard of Oz pulled in 2.9 million viewers and a 13% audience share between 6.05pm and 8pm on Sunday December 18.

In 2004, Miracle on 34th Street attracted 3.9 million viewers and a 17% audience share between 5.55pm and 8pm on Sunday December 5.

In 2003, the same movie pulled 4.6 million viewers on the first Sunday afternoon in December.

Five will be hoping that this coming Saturday's movie The Flight of the Reindeer will have the same effect.

Torchwood's multichannel record lasted long. Hogfather's overnight was actually 2.6 million with multi-starts added:

Pratchett pulls in the viewers for Sky

The first part of Sky One's adaptation of Terry Pratchett's The Hogfather managed an impressive average of 2.6 million viewers last night.

This figure means the 6 million production, which stars David Jason and Marc Blake, has become the highest rated multichannel commission, beating BBC Three's Torchwood, which started on 2.4 million viewers in October.

2.4 million viewers initially tuned in to Sky One, according to unofficial overnights, but Hogfather increased its audience as Sky's multi-start viewers were added to the figures.

Sky One director of programmes Richard Woolfe said: "Sir David Jason has brought Christmas to Sky One early. Terry Pratchett's film was the perfect fantasy treat for people of all ages."

Only an episode of Friends broadcast on Sky One in January 2000, which was watched by 2.7 million viewers, has achieved higher ratings for non-sport content on the channel.

Also about 2 million folk watching the BBC Three broadcasts over the week. Tuesday repeats are averaging about 350-400,000 and the Friday repeats have gained a few hundred thousand in the last few weeks (now about equal with Tuesdays).
