ITV have better competition then though - X Factor plus that ice dancing thing did quite well in the New Year. I think Who's doing just fine where it is!

Another massive overnight for the BBC Three repeat (info from Marcus on OG).
'The Shakespeare Code' - 998,000
Doctor Who Confidential - 585,000
Fantastic figures since they've moved it to 8pm/away from ITV1's soapy hour. Looking like final figures over 1 millon two weeks in a row. Lost is now down to 580,000.*
*I am aware of the reasons for this, but I needed a cheeky bit for the end.

Where's the cheese fool?
Doctor Who was once more top of the charts with unofficial overnight figures showing that Episode Three, Gridlock, was watched by 8.0 million viewers, a 39.5% share of the total audience.
The programme was the most watched of the day by nearly two million viewers, beating Any Dream Will Do, which gained 6.2 million. The programme had almost double the viewers of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? on ITV1.
In terms of share it was fourth, just being beaten by the sporting events of the afternoon. With one day to go, this makes the programme the seventh most watched of the week, beating three episodes of EastEnders, and gives Gridlock a high probability of bringing Doctor Who once more into the week's top ten.
Doctor Who was again top of the children's top ten, with 1.4 million under 16s watching, double the second placed Any Dream Dill Do
Doctor Who Confidential was top of the multichannel charts, with a rating of 0.56m viewers, over 50% more than the second placed Inspector Morse.Top Ten by Millions:

Considering the possibility that Match of the Day might well have caused Doctor Who to be rescheduled last night, I think it's rather ironic that the latter got almost 2 million more than the former. If they'd not shown Extra Time because of Doctor Who, football fans would have been up in arms; if they'd not shown Doctor Who because of Extra Time, any Who fans who were up in arms would probably have been labelled as mad, sad anoraks. There's democracy for you!
Can I just add, I didn't mind the possibility of it being rescheduled because of Extra Time, but it does make you think!

Once again, it's a tremendous performance! As I said last week, this was a tricky one to predict, and I didn't know then that we'd have temperatures more akin to mid-July than mid-April!
Let's this put in perspective - EE was getting 20m+ viewers in the late 80s, as were other big hitters like Corrie, Neighbours and Bread. It's like Battlefield getting at least 20m viewers!

I was cheering on Man U all through the afternoon - just so Who would be on! I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

Not much bitching about the football/later timeslot on OG now.
Shame Doctor Who will probably be back down to an overnight of about 7 millionish next week due to the earlier start. Sort it out, Mr Scheduler!
The best thing about last night is the low figures for Grease Is the Word and Gameshow Marathon. I think Vernon Kay is next week's opposition!
Edited to add: The five-minute breakdown is another good thing about last night.

I'm confident we'll at least retain the 8m mark - don't forget its the Dalek factor with all the attendant publicity, including an RT cover. Plus it'll be cooler by next weekend!

Excellent ratings once again, and as Jonno points out, putting it in perspective, Doctor Who is regularly getting the highest ratings in its history.
I'm pretty sure next week's episode will do just as well, but does anyone know why it's on earlier?

There's no obvious reason, other than the fact that at two programmes totalling some 90 minutes, this latest reality nonsense (Joseph) is eating up lots of airtime. Also note that at the moment, episode 5 is even earlier at 6.45.
You'll probably find there's been as many episodes of new Who not on at 7 as there have been at 7, what with Eurovision, footie and so on. Anyway, the original series never really had a fixed slot, did it?

Didn't hear any announcement afterwards as I'd already flicked to BBC3 as Gridlock seemed to finish later than 8.20 (unless my clock was wrong!). AFAIK it's 6.50, but there'll be riots in English streets if the Scots see Daleks 15 mins before us!
As for Tim's point above, it would appear that the original series was rarely on directly after football/news - the first season was 5.15 ish, as were S6 & S7 but the ones bwetween were various times up to 5.50. First story after 6pm was Colony, plus Daemons, at 6.10.
S9 onwards varied between 5.30 and 5.55 until S14 when Whitehouse's complaints saw it moved back to 6.10 at the earliest (6.30 latest) right to the end of the 70s.
The first four stories of S18 started between 5.40 and 6ish, but the last three in the new year were 5.10. S22 was 5.20 while Trial was 5.45 (after Roland Rat, wasn't it?).
Certainly in my childhood, we had the likes of Disney or Basil Brush before Who.

It was Wogan before Doctor Who in my childhood!

Me too! When I was 10, me, my Dad and my sister all used to pile upstairs to watch McCoy's seasons while Mum watched "Corrie" downstairs!
