You can only attract those viewers who are around to be attracted- and those figures seem to show that there are 2-3 million who turn over specifically for Who and then go off and do something else. I'd also suspect that it's quite difficult to add viewers for Part 2 of a two-part story- you can lose the people who didn't like Part 1, but it's difficult persuade somebody to watch the second half of a story when they didn't see the beginning.

If nothing else, the constant flitting around the schedules this year proves very clearly the importance of the actual time slot, plus having a good lead-in is. For all the whingeing that many fans made about the footie making Gridlock start at 7.40, it was the best thing that could have happened to it ratings wise. Start it an hour earlier with a weak lead-in and you can see the results for yourself.
It's clear that 7pm is the ideal earliest time, and even 15 minutes earlier makes a marked difference. 7.15-7.30 would be the ideal start time IMO. However, with next week's back to 7pm, I'm going to predict at least 7m.
Also, Casualty may have scored higher for the first time this year, but its share is still lower, so still nothing to worry about!Last edited by Jonno; 29th Apr 2007 at 12:51 PM. Reason: start "earlier" not "later" makes a big difference!

Jonno speaks the truth.
It looks like the last two episodes would've averaged about 7 million if they'd started at 7pm.
Josh's mighty return clearly boosted the Casualty figure as well.

That's about the third time you've said I speak the truth in the last couple of weeks! I rarely lie on PS!
I forgot to mention that the guff about MOTD not being allowed to start after 10.30 is complete bollox! When Eurovision and Last Night of the Proms are on, it usually starts around 11pm, and I remember it being on between 11.30 and 1am once!

Maybe there's a clause in the contract for "big live sport/music events", or something.
-
29th Apr 2007, 6:03 PM #82
Maybe it's the "BBC speaking absolute shash" clause to blame.

The Beeb seem to be attaching far too much importance to 'Any Dream Will Do'. Yes, I know it's a live show, but why the need to plan its Saturday evening schedule around it, rather than 'Doctor Who' and 'Casualty', surely the 'crown jewels'?
OK, so 'Doctor Who' is going to get decent ratings no matter what time they show it, and 6.5m is still fairly reasonable, but they need to stop pissing around with its timeslot. Does anyone know yet what time it's on next week?

29th Apr 2007, 11:32 PM #84
It was originally 6:45pm on the Press Office listings, but they changed it to 7pm last week.
They seem to have merged The People's Quiz into one 6-7pm show next Saturday, with a ten minute Lottery Draw after Casualty.
Hopefully it'll stay like that for the rest of its run. Well, apart from Eurovision night (Doctor Who is listed as 6:40pm) and possibly the FA Cup Final.

1,034m for last night's BBC Three repeat and 444,000 for Confidential.
Once again, Sunday's Coronation Street,, Kingdom and The Royal knock Doctor Who down to 19th on the overnight chart for the week.

Great share once again, though a slightly disappointing rating seeing as Who was back in the 7pm slot. Still, it was another glorious evening here, so I'm not entirely shocked.

The Series Three average is pobably going to be about half a million down on last year, isn't it? Ill-informed clowns will be able to claim that the show is dying.

An average of 8.7m/39.9% for The Eurovision Song Contest Final 2007 last night. Peaked with a massive 10.9 million during the results round about 10:30-10:45pm. Should be the highest rated final this decade once timeshifts are added.
The National Lottery Draws pulled in 5.8m/29.8% and Any Dream Will Do had 5.1m/27.7%.
ITV1's top show of the day was Vernon Kay's Gameshow Marathon with 4.4m/24.1%. 4.3m/19.9% for Grease Is the Word.

That's what I thought, too - the bad weather yesterday would have been ideal for Who. Ah well, let's hope the pull of the FA Cup Final, and what is effectively the 'return' of 'Doctor Who' is enough to keep people watching BBC One next Saturday.
